    Remington 1911 rac

Purchased this pistol above as a project a while ago inconsistent firing being the problem the pistol is very consistent now and doesn't fire at all, seems like the hammer is not hitting the valve(a new one). With the mag out of the gun the and a tap on the valve with a screw driver it fires ok, any ideas lads.

Try sticking your finger up the mag well to feel if the hammer is working (the external hammer is just for show)

    Remove the top slide.
You will see a square pin sticking out.
This is what actually strikes the valve.
When you insert the mag, this pin shouldn't ride up but sometimes it does. That's the fault.

I have one here the same on my to do pile.

Just checked mine and yes, you'll need to remove the slide as you can't get your finger high enough to feel the hammer.
It's actually designed to move upwards to allow the valve pin to clear it when inserting a magazine. Pull the trigger and ease the external hammer forward and you'll see it at the top rear of the magazine well. With the hammer down you shouldn't be able to push it in. It will move up but spring pressure should move it down again when you release it.

Had a try today after removing the slide I could see the hammer(pin) when the mag is inserted it lifts up and stays there (you can see the square end) but it does not drop down, if I cock the gun I can push the pin back and then insert the mag it did fire but only the once I had no bb's in the mag.

As neil54 said the pin is lifting when the mag is inserted stopping it firing I can fiddle and get it to fire but only once and then back to normal ie not firing, is there a fix for this ?

Using the link provided above, I stripped the 1911. I found the small spring on the hammer had become disconnected. I reassembled it and after a few dry fires the hammer was loose again. I stripped the 1911 again and formed a slight hook on the end of the spring.

    The spring lives here.

I have again reassembled the 1911 and all appears well, so far.
