Hi Guys,

Have got a QB78 which i think is great, no recoil and fairly powerful, dont have a chrono so dont know the exact power but seems to pack a good punch.

I had a springer when i was younger and am currently refinishing the stock on it to get it back in working order. Its a B3-F, lets face it, it isnt brilliant, weighs the same as a small cannon and shoots like a dog.

Id like my first decent springer( so i can still shoot when i havent got any co2 powerlets to hand)

Id prefer british or german but any decent quality suggested will be loocked into.

Im trying to stick below £200 all in, including a scope and gunbag etc, id like to find a compromise between quality and price, so as cheap as poss. but still full power and well made.

Also im currently shooting targets but may try live quarry someday so here we go.... .177 or .22?

Ive looked at pneumatics but dont want all the dive bottle hassle. Just want a self contained peice of kit if you know what i mean?

So am i looking at

BSA Meteor
Lightning Xl

Weihrauch HW57

I dont know where to start guys.

For that price range I would go for the Weihrauch.

Not the Meteor.
I'd recomend the Super Sport or Lightning.
Not sure if the HW 95 comes into your price range if you want those extras. Where abouts do you live? I've got an as new HW95 for sale at £125 Collected
but I'm in mid Wales. Good luck.

Get a second hand HW80 or 95 and then buy a tuning kit and you will have a gun that shoots as well as the best off the shelf springers. Takes no time to DIY. The HW have better triggers and also have a cocking bar running central to the piston which helps keep it central through the spring guide, a much better system than the sear connectors on some makes.

The exocet isn't in the same league as the HW's or the TX's. Both AA and HW use the trigger and piston connection system i outlined instead of the sear mating to the piston from underneath. The Rekord and CD units trounce any Webley or BSA units, plus tune kits are easy to install as are other DIY fettles that will transform the gun. Imagine the sound a high quality car door makes when it closes compared to a cheap and nasty and you will have a feel for the difference between these guns. If you tune a 95 or 80 well it will be quiet and very pleasent to shoot, it will also last for decades.

do a search for calibre

are you going to shoot targets or hunt or both ask your self the questions and then i suggest you go to a club and try other peoples guns in 177 and 22

Theres loads on which 22 or 177 and most people pull out there hair when they get asked;) but consider a 22 will always be smoother than the same set up in 177 as it is more air efficient and creates less piston bounce. 177 is flatter shooting at 12fpe and will be easier to hold over/under but at the distances we shoot air a 22 can be very effective once you learn the distances. If you want FAC air then 22 is the best springer option.

Im probably going to go 177 for the easier over under ranges.

Has a rabbit say, got more chance of surviving a headshot with a 177 than a 22.

Say teh wind takes the shot low and it gets it in the chest, will a 177 fly out the other end and cause a painful end??

You will kill cleanly with a head shot in both calibres, if you hit anywhere else it will in most cases run and suffer. The wind is more likely to effect windage than elevation, practice on paper or tin until you know the shot is going to connect.

If i was you i'd buy one of these, as i'm very tempted my self, i have shot one, and for a full power springer, there is hardly any recoil to be felt, as when it was designed by cometa to be a f.a.c project, but for the U.K limit of 12ftlbs the De-tuned it:D
So its very easy to cock, and extreamly accurtae, you can pick them up for about £160 to £180, and with a walnut stock as well;)
As for the 22 vs 177, the argument will go on for ever, but personally i favour 22, mianly beacuse it's what i'm used to, but so long as you hit it in the rite place(i.e the head) its gunna die.

All the best Rob

I'd go secondhand. Plenty of excellent, quality springers out there. I'd go for a Longbow or HW97 - 95..

Keep looking in the for sale section & ask at your club or with mates.

I just picked up toniight a virtualy brand new HW57 in .177, which has just had £135 worth of Venom tuning, for £140. :D :D Shoots sweet as a nut & does not have a mark on it. Can't go wrong with a Weihrauch. Keep looking & you will find one soon enough.
