They would know when they weighed it full bottles can weigh up to 20lbs heavier when fully charged;)

I would guess this is true. It probably also applies to PCP airguns as well.

To be fair the carrier should know what it is they've got on board.
(Probably a legal requirement)

I didn't realise they weighed that much more myself  I weighed mine with the gauge and hose as somebody wanted to buy it 300 miles away, it weighed 16.5 Kg and they wanted 45 euros to send it. The sale fell through purely on the courier charge :(

Yes a bottle weighs more when it has more air in it. Basic physics really, everything has mass (including air) if you pack more air in then there's more mass.

I think the BANG! factor is the reason they want it empty.

How many shots do you get out of a 12L bottle?

X times 12ft/lbs is a lot of stored energy!

Look what it did to Jaws... if you remember the film.

Air is much heavier than you might imagine - the air in a room that is 10 feet x 10 feet x 10 feet weighs 80lbs! :D

Really? Gordon Bennett! I'll have to empty the bottle then re-weigh it, might get my sale then :p

Its sensible to send it empty, if Postman Pat's van caught fire, his black and white cat would end up in orbit..!

Good! I bloomin hated his cat!:( mangy thing! He'd look at you with those piercing yellow eyes. Very mistrustful if you ask me!

Nope. I preffered Jones the steam's little bird that he had on board Ivor the Engine. Far less eerie!

its a legal requirement to empty any compressed air vessel prior to tranport, as courier companies dont tend to be insured to transport explosives, which is what a full diving cylinder should ALWAYS BE treated as. hence the mandatory visual and hydro testing... you can find companies that will transport full cylinders, but expect to pay a small fortune.

My take on it was not whether to send a full bottle or not as I'd have emptied it first anyway, for safety reasons, it's just that I didn't know fresh air weighed so much! I wonder what a fart weighs? :p :D :D

I think we should add the point, that if you were prepared to collect a cylinder from whomever, then they would be able to leave whatevever pressure was stored within. it then being your responsibility. Be sure to check pressure certificate values though.

I had a 15 litre 232 bottle, weighed 24 kilo full and 17 empty.

I'm only guessing, but as a guideline, a fart that is 10 foot x 10 foot x 10 foot (which I can do, by the way), would weigh 80lbs.

i think robin hewitt said that a divers bottle has the same explosive energy of a 1lb block of semtex.
imagine that much explosive power in the confines of a van/truck.

weight of a fart question?.......wet or dry fart, lumps or no lumps?! :D

Air at room temperature weighs about 1.2 kilograms per cubic metre. Your bottle capacity is 12 litres, that is to say 12/1000 = 0.012 cubic metres.

So for every bar of pressure the air inside weighs 1.2 x 0.012 = 0.0144 kilograms.

When your bottle is full you have 300 bar pressure. Technically you have 1 bar when it is empty, so the difference is 299 bar.

299 x 0.0144 = 4.3 kilograms. That's the extra weight of a full bottle over an empty one.

Assuming that air behaves as a perfect gas which is not strictly true but close enough for this example.

Hi

I think you will find that a 12 litre cylinder @ 232 bar will be about 3.6 Kg (7.9Lbs) lighter when empty!

If you buy the remaining pellet scale on my deal I am sure you can find a way to weigh a fart with it to an accuracy of 0.01 grains:D

Just 1 left now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That means that we rare at number 69 Fnar, Fnar.;)

You forget that farts contain Methane which has a different density to air.

You can tell they contain Methane because they explode when you light them:D

Which is why you should never use farts to fill your divers bottle.

Don't forget to close the valve after you've emptied your cylinder.

There is a small risk that with all this humid air we've got at the moment that some damp could get into your cylinder. Don't give rust the chance to take hold!

It's better never to completely empty a cylinder, but when posting it (or taking a pony bottle on a plane when going diving) what else can you do? :(
