Just bought my first pre charge air rifle.

First time I tried to fill up there was a lot of air escaping from the connection between the hose and bottle thus preventing full pressure being reached.
Also nothing happens when opening the bleed valve.

Am I doing something wrong ?

Find the conection where the air is leaking, and put some tape on. Simple.

Just one thing to check, you're not trying to use a 300 bar bottle with a 232 bar hose and gauge are you? The 232 fitting does not have enough length of thread to cause the rubber washer to seat at the back of the valve recess.

Tried sealing with tape but far too much air still escaping.
I have a 300bar bottle but don't understand the difference in hoses.
I bought it in a kit from BAR so can only assume that it is the correct combination.

Just check to see if you have the rubber washer on the end the connects to the bottle.you should have one but it might have come without one and the value assy does not move in or out

Have a look at the threaded plug thing on the end of the hose - or gauge - that screws into the valve on the bottle. Count how many turns of thread it has.

If it's got four or five turns, that's your problem, it's a 232 bar hose. The 300 bar bottles have deeper sockets on the valves, and they need about 7 turns of thread. If you put a 232 hose onto a 300 bottle then the washer at the end of the hose won't reach the bottom of the valve and you won't get a seal.

This is a deliberate safety thing to stop people using hoses that may be only safe enough for 232 bar, on 300 bar bottles.

It seems to be the correct hose for the bottle. It has seven turns of thread. At the base of this there is a washer and two nuts<img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_redface.gif" alt="Red Face" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::o-->ne narrow and then next to that, one wide. The air appeared to escape from between the narrow nut and the washer area.I tried to tighten all the nuts but everything seemed o.k. with that.
