A simple way to clean the barrel of a 77 is cock the action most of the way without cocking it completely, and shove a wooden plug into the gap around the breech, one end jammmed against the cylinder. This way, you dont have to fire a pellet after cleaning, since the gun had to be cocked all the way to access the breech.

I think it is a member in our forum(?) who cleans his 77 by cocking the action most of the way, and shoving his thigh between the lever and the barrel to get at the breech. I tried this twice (ouch!) and settled on the wood plug idea that's absolutely painless !!!! <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_wink.gif" alt="Wink" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:;)-->

Thigh? Must be anorexic.

Make sure that the grain on the wooden block is perpendicular to the length of the rifle. I would also make grooves at both ends as a precaution against slippage.

Hmmmm, yes maybe grooves, but the wooden rawl plug is about an inch and a half and pretty thick for its purpose, and sits snugly inside the breech opening.

Incidentally, is it at all possible to 'uncock' the 77, the way we do it with break barrels ?

Further, after roughly how many shots will the breech seal need a replacment ?

While the early 77's had no antibeartrap, most others do, so you'd have to remove the beartrap unit in order to decock the gun. It's simple to do, but there may be legal and warranty issues involved with such a removal. RB
