I recently read somewhere ( can't recall where ) that venom used to do some of the bluing on theoben rifles .
Is this true or just bull.
Any body got any info on this dates ,models etc .
Cheers

According to the Theoben wesbsite, they installed their own in-house bluing tanks & polishing gear in May of '96.

Venom definitely did used to do their blueing for them at some point before this.

Cheers for the reply's chaps.
Is there any way of telling if its venom blued apart from the serial no for the dates ,any special markings.
I,ve got a fenman and the bluing on it(not blacking) looks superb it sure looks like a venom job , but the serial no puts the manufacture date at june/july 1998 .

Theoben installed their blueing equipment in May of '96 during which time it appears the H.E actions weren't being produced (months of April & May), so its fair to say that any actions manufactured and blued after the eqipment was installed: - Serial number TB10171 or later, will be Theobens own blueing.

As for comparison, both finishes are excellent, but the Venom blueing on my pre H.E rifle looks slightly deeper than the later Theoben finish, depth of blueing is all down to the pre-finish polish FWIW.

I have made these comments, so you may have read them.
Of the guns I have, all Theobens, the 95 and 96 Olypuses are excellent, as is the 98 Rapid, however the 2001 Fenman is not. Shine a lamp on the silencer and you see orange rust, not due to lack of maintenance by me, maybe previous owner.
The rest of it is pretty good admitedly.
Also, bought a new Vortex cap in September last year and it is now light blue, this is aluminium i think, poor finishing. Other secondhand vortexes I have are nice and black.
I feel that they are cutting costs, and are losing touch with what they should be doing.
The scope rails on the Evo gun are another example of cost reduction, ie cheaper to produce than the rail.

Too true Jack, you've seen my Rapid...sn 800 odd
the blueing is a million miles away from modern ones!

Give us quality...we'll pay, honest guv!

Actually SBSD, Theoben installed their own blueing plant in the mid 80s. All guns since the very early ones were blued by Theoben, as I said earlier

Martin (the boss) at Theoben did in fact used to polish and black the Mach 2s for Venom

I was always very impressed with Venom and Theoben blueing - my mate bought a Theoben Grand Prix many years ago which was stunningly blued and my Venom '77 was also very handsome indeed.
In my opinion, the best blueing in the business nowadays is done by ISP Air-Rifles. It might cost a couple of quid more than blueing from the off quoted '...my mate who does blueing' folk, but it's certainly justified in the end.

I stand corrected Baz, Theo's earlier 'own -blued ' rifles do appear to have a 'deeper'quality than of late (IMO of course)
