View Full Version : Pumping up Gas Rams...How often?

Bought an Olympus .177 last December. As new. HE system.

Chronoed it over Winter (when it's cold) and it's doing 11.3FP with Daystates and AA fields. That'll do nicely.

Just tried it again up the garden (it's @ 24 C out there) and it's doing 9.8FP

I would have thought the warmer temps of the Summer if anything might have tweaked the power up a touch.

Has this 'leaked' slightly?

How often do you Theoben folks have to pump up your HE systems?

To be honest I shot a load of pellets at a target at @ 13 yards and it's still on zero at that range and is putting pellet on pellet.

I think we've covered this before about chrono readings. Possibilty of errors due to bright light and shadows, gun too close to sensors etc.

It just drives me bonkers. If I'm hitting what I'm aiming at then that's all that counts to me but I bought the Chrono so that I could set up my guns and be legal.

PS Before I posted this I thought I'd try a few other guns.

The S10 was doing @ 11.8FP over Winter. That's now reading 12.9FP. Is that because of the higher temp effect on the compressed air or has this chrono gone psycho?

Thanks Baz. Trouble is I'm a 6 months on 6 months off airgunner.

I shoot every day in the Winter but only very rarely in the Summer.

Now I'm totally losing it......I've just tried a venom 77 that was doing 11.6 a few months ago. That's now reading 12.4. <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_mad.gif" alt="Mad" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::mad:-->

At this rate I'll be throwing bricks at the targets at Chester.

I'm going down the woods to have some target practice shooting at this Chrony.

Just to wind you up even more Bozzer. Chronoed my Sirocco 12yrs ago at 12.01ftlb. Re-chronoed in spring 11.99ftlb. <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::D--> <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_razz.gif" alt="Razz" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::p--> <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::D-->

Depends on the chrono, check on another one.

As a comparison, I bought an Olympus recently, previous owner had it in his gun cabinet for five years unused and I chronoed it on a Combro, in the shadows where it gives a more consistent reading, and put out 11.1-11.3. which is pretty good considering.
The gun was actually made in 96 which is a long five years.
Theoben recommend regular usage otherwise the seals can go, which can be replaced for a £50 service.

One Theoben Olympus about to hit the For Sale section.

look before you leap.
If you phone Theoben they will probably say send it to us.
It may or may not be the seals that is just one possibility.
The seals have not gone in my gun and as I said it stuck in the sellers cabinet for 5 years.
LEt SBSD or Baz have a poke around in it if they are willing, see if they can sort it out.

Got me thinking so,

I chrono'd the fenman and it's doing 13 ft/lb. a month ago it was shooting 11.7.

I know it's hot at the mo but should it jump up that much?

Dazz

PS if it's now shooting at 13 will it knack the crown?

you should be ok, Theoben designed these with a safety factor.
The temperature expands the air in the ram giving higher pressure.
I think they can be easily used at 14ftlbs.

The scary thing about this is it puts another factor into the "capable of exceeding" aspect of the legal limit.
