I’ve always used 3 in 1 for wiping over the barrel/action on my guns but what silicone or synthetic based product is the best to use.

Cheers

Hi Kev

same here but reading the Daystate manual they advise against it on their barrels.

well you can get a PTFE based aerosol 3 in 1 as well. I have been trying that out and it seems Ok.

Ballistol

web page (http://www.ballistol.co.uk)

Brilliant for oilstocks too...me Grandad even used it, it's making a big comeback now.

Never used anything else Pete <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_wink.gif" alt="Wink" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:;)-->

Give Robert Ellis a shout...ok Bloke BTW...talks for hours about black powder shooting!

Why use 3 in 1 oil over oil designed for use on guns?

Bisley gun oil is quite a good standard gun oil, and quite cheap at 2 pounds, i have found this to be quite good for all airgun uses.

Well Ian, they use 3in1 in my local gun shop, I use 3in1 on my guitars, I used to use 3in1 on my old Norton and Matchless, and if it was good enough for them it is good enough for my Guns <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::D-->

3 in 1, it does what it says on the tin <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_wink.gif" alt="Wink" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:;)-->

BSA also shuns silicone on it's guns. I've got so many gun oils on my shelf that I grab whatever is handy. The cloths have a mix of 3 in 1, G-96 Gun Treatment, RemOil and lord knows what else in 'em after years of use. They all work well.. even in combination <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::D--> RB

Its just Daystate don't advise using oils that contain rust inhibitors chemically blackened parts.

Pete

PS can't you tell i've got the book in front of me the way i wrote that above <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::D-->

Kev,
I was just saying why use a standard oil like 3 in 1 over all the gun oils that are out there, if you get it free then that is one thing, but something like 3 in 1 and gun oil are about the same price, and the VP90 stuff surely must be better than 3 in 1.

But just my thoughts.

I use a cloth soaked in molly oil, never had any rust problems. Or Parker hale Express gun oil. A cloth soaked in new car engine oil though works just as well.

Must it ?

Air Arms recommend 3in1 as an alternative to napier.

Browning Legia Spray. I've been using it for years on all sorts of weapons from airguns to shotguns.

It comes in three different can sizes and the smallest can of it costs roughly £2.50. It's made by Browning and since they've got a bit more experience than everyone on here, I'm assuming they know a thing or two about what's best. <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::D-->

this Ballistol stuff look's good, just been reading the info on the web site (<A HREF="http://www.ballistol.co.uk" TARGET=_blank>>>> webpage here ! <<<</A>), is a good allround oil (like 3in1) yet dont rot or damage any rubber or sinthetic seals (unlike 3in1) <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_eek.gif" alt="Eek" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::eek:-->. not badly priced aswell <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::D-->, think il be buying a bottle just to see if what it say's on the lable is true. and if it does do what it say's on the lable it will be a permenent fixture in the old gun box <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_wink.gif" alt="Wink" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:;)--> <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::D--> <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_wink.gif" alt="Wink" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:;)-->
