Definitely a Webley. As the Tracker and Viscount are out it surely must be an Osprey.

Is this going to be something daft that's marked up as a Beeman? No idea what the model number would be though if it is (C1?). The other option is that it's just marked up as a Webley Supertarget.
Just found a reference to a Webley Airwolf too?

Evening Ian,
This was an interesting post- and until you confirmed the rifle I was utterly convinced it was some form of Sussex Armoury rifle. And I mean UTTERLY.
Anyway, I must have missed this one on the market or was looking the other way or something as I dont recall it "doing the rounds".

What do you know of the marque? When was it brought out and for what market? Home or abroad? It would be of interest as to what you can say about it. How rare is it?

Dave:)

Hiya Dave,

This rifle didn't exactly go on the market ;) it was rescued from my local gun shop before it made the racks. Its another one from last years Webley auction.
I know very little of its history but will look into it. As far as Im aware it was a Tracker produced for the US market and doesn't have the back sight facility on the barrel. Another example of this model in the auction had a rear sight on the scope rail similar to the HW77.
At the moment its with RAYGUN who is an expert with Trackers and is now the north west premier Barnett Spitfire gunsmith. :)

Thanks Ian,
This post brings up the subject of the numerous amount of air rifles that were actuallly produced by one of the "big names" for smaller companies to put their own branding on them. Do you recall the "Cobra Strike" a .25 barrelled BSA Mercury? I am sure you do and there must be dozens of others. I recall (and recently saw the old advert in an old copy of AGW) for a "green" stocked HW35 with (I think) some sort of blacked action (other than bluing) that was called the HW35 "Safari" (I may be wrong about the action finish but the stock I am certain on.

Anyway, these small production runs must surely mean that these rifles now will be more desirable and collectable? Seems like you have one such example above?

Then there is the whole area of guns produced by the manufacturers to mark special occasions and in themselves had limited production runs. One I always fancied was the Original 45 with the inset medal commemorating something or another (one was sold on here not that long ago).
Congrats on an interesting post (even though I was wrong by a fortnight on the gun's identity)!

Dave:)

Hiya Dave,

I think you will find IIRC that the action on the Safari 35 was parkerized. (Ive had a hard days shooting and Im too lazy to check my books).

Didn't M.A.G. (Manchester Air Guns ;) ) re-name the BSA Mercury that they sold with 3 barrels? Thens theres the BAR Barracudda (sp).

Weihrauch and Daisy also produced, (at the drop of a hat ;)) , an anniversary model to celibrate a variety of subjects. BSA also did the same thing with the Centenary (Airsporter), Meteor and S10.

Food for thought.

Hi Ian,
Yeah I recall the BSA Centenary. Now I never, ever have gone a bundle on BSA's, (back then I would only look at a Webley as regards British rifles), but the Centenary did catch my eye. Maybe even back in those formative years I was a closet collector:D

Its an interesting subject this. I mean you had the odd competition in AGW or AG where you may have for example a chromed HW77 or even a gold plated one. Were these produced for the comp or were there more examples around? More to the point WHERE ARE THEY!!!!!

I suspect the owners of these rifles are staying tight lipped?

I really did miss that one of yours being produced. I used to read the mags religeously and thought that not that much escaped my attention. Just goes to show?

Keep up the good work:p

Dave:)

I know of a gold plated HW77 and HW35E which are for sale ;) . I seem to remember the three '35s being presented to the Bontoft brothers by Herman Weihrauch for increasing the sales of his rifles in the U.K., one of which appeared in the airgun magazines as a prize. The winner didn't much like the idea of a gold rifle so soon p/x it for something more practical. This is the one thats for sale.

UPDATE: RAYGUN very kindly stripped the Spitfire (cheers Ray ;) ) and found out that it had been stripped previously about 5 times. The insides were very dry of grease/lube and the back buffer washer broke and the spring guide missing. Ray replaced these with spares he just happened to have!
Its now shooting a lot quieter and smoother and while slightly down on power (just over 6 ft.lbs m.e.) it increased to 7+ ft.lbs after only a few settling in shots. I have removed the foresight unit (no rust :) ) and fitted a period (http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/7289/spitfire1vv0.png) scope and will put some shots through it the next time I'm at the range.

Thank you for all the interest (PMs and e-mails) shown in this rifle. Another bit of airgunning history and another famous aircraft name added to the Webley list (Hurricane, Tempset, Vulcan, Typhoon, Viscount, Victor ....)
