Hi.
Following from this >>THREAD<< (http://www.airgunbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=270186) about 6yd targets. I posted a comment on whether a honourable gentlemans postal competition would start?
Now I know it's being done in the target section. However they use different targets & different range.
I wonder if anyone is interested? I don't mind doing the scores & updating on the forum, as for the rules & dates. I'll let people with more knowledge to guide me ;)
What do you think
The rules :
Type: Spring Pistol / Single Stroke Pistol (to be stated when submitting score).
Sights: Open sights only
Stance: Top two targets two handed / Bottom two targets one handed (that way it caters for everyone & abit different)
Targets: Follow link on post #1 >HERE< (http://www.airgunbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=270186) using the target with 4 targets on it.
Range: Set at 6yds (That is the longest I can shoot in the back garden)
Shots: 10/15 practice shots, then 5 shots per target
Date: Anytime in the first week of every month. Starting May.
Scoring: If the pellet breaks into two points i.e 8 & 9, you score the highest number
Final scores: PM me with scores by Friday/Saturday.
Update scores: I'll put on the thread Saturday/Sunday.
If anyone can add to this or have any ideas please let me know.
Regards
Paddy. :)

Hi Andy.
Pictures could be posted on the thread, open sights only. Good idea of practice shots say 10/15 only.
I've already set up a monthly score sheet & leader board (tried to do PDF Link, works on xl format, had no luck yet?). Say once a month we can either start at end of April or begining of May?

Paddy. :)

Paddy, you ARE allowed to shoot pollythedog's competition at 6 yards, but you must use the 6 yard (reduced scale) target. I'm starting to use that one. My pistol / I seem to shoot better at 6 yards than at 10 meters, and as there are 4 bullseyes on that target, you can do the whole shoot using a single target.
I don't have a springer pistol - mine is a variant of the HW 40, and is really a single stroke pneumatic - but I think more competitions are always good: even if I don't have the time to compete. Right now, I'm doing just Polly's, but that's over in May.
Polly's allows, if I recall, any pistol that requires manual charging for each shot: NO PCP's or CO2's, in other words.
Cheers!

Sounds good to me, Single stroke & Spring as most of us have at least one of them, looking at the targets Jamie has posted do i take it you can shoot either 10m or 6 yrd on the appropriate target as i shoot 10m and don't really fancy adjusting my zero for the postal and then back to 10 for the club.
So Paddy leave it upto you for the dates as you are the man offering to do the scoring.

Paddy, two other matters that I can think of:
- Are we restricted to one-hand hold or can we use two?
- Are we restricted to iron sights or can we use optical?
I like to shoot an air pistol competition the traditional way: one hand, iron sights - but many don't.

Count me and my Webley Typhoon in, 6 yards, I'm gonna have to measure from the top of the stairs to the bottom. lol
Any hints on pellet types? I'm a re-born airgun fan, had a rifle some 15 years ago and recently got the pistol and a tin of wadcutters (if that's what they're called), the flat headed ones.
Planning to buy a rifle in the next month or so as well, I was thinking of an HW97, any other recommendations?

Thanks

If anyone was after the coveted 'wooden spoon' you've had it! I had a practice earlier and it was woeful. I haven't printed the targets off yet but if they're as small as I think they are (same as the ones I used) I'll end up losing points for hitting the wrong one!
How does the scoring work btw, if a pellet lands mostly in the '3' ring but breaks the line to the '2' ring is that a 2?
cookie
12-04-2008, 10:58 PM
I would asume inward scoring to make us look a bit better than we are, so if it's mostly in the 8 but breaks the 9 ring you score 9.
is this agree-able with the rest of you guy's if so Paddy can you add to the list of rules fella.

Pfft, I can get scores like that leaning on a bench! Free standing, two-handed I got around the 30 mark. I gave up practicing one-handed after getting 7 with three shots (1x5 2x1). I think the five was a lucky shot.

Lo Pad,I ask because on the pistol comp that pollthedog is running which was 6yds or 10 mtrs depending on safe ranges:) 10 mtrs you had the bullseye 1.4 mtrs off the ground or there abouts;) so with the 6 yrd targets do you think you would set the centre of the target card to the same height (1.4mtrs)for this comp:)By the way yes please put my name down:Dare we allowed to shoot more than one pistol and I don't mean at the same time 'Billy the kid' style:D

Hi Mark.
If you want to use two guns seperatly ;) :D then I don't mind submitting two scores.
I've done a score sheet on excel that has all the criteria of name, gun used, target score & total score. >>Test Score Sheet<< (http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b312/PaddyE/Pistol%20Competition/?action=view¤t=scores.jpg)
As for height I shall check my firing range, if I can do that, until then I think it's best just being the target in the safest place.
Regards
Paddy. :)

Is it OK to post May scores yet?
If so, I did, with a Beeman P3 single-stroke pneumatic .177 with H&N wadcutters:
2-handed, 30 and 33
1-handed, 24 and 25 =
112 / 200 (worse than I did all-one-handed on Polly's competition! )
If not: then it gives me more time to practice! :p
But in all seriousness, I need a heavier pistol: I just can't hold that plastic piece steady enough to score well with it.

Believe it or not, in Cowboy Action Shooting, that is an accepted category, called Gunslinger. :)

It's the first week in May, so you've got another 10 days. What I was thinking is PM me the scores & once I've got all scores I'll make it public. Gives it abit more suspence :D

Sounds good to me paddy, like a bit suspence now and again.
Shot a card yesterday definatley getting better one handed, i was surprised when shooting at 6 yards i didn't have to change my sights from 10m is this normal, or is my eye sight worse than i thought and they where ll lucky shots
keep those pellets flying boys.

Hi Jim before buying a new pistol or adding wieght to your muzzle try this, get your self 12" of fishing line and a tub of lead fishing wieghts, loop and tie off the line and add wieghts to the line and loop over the muzzle so it pulls the end down, keep adding wieght until it shoots the way you want. it's a cheap option to find out the wieght required, once you know the wieght you can add it permanatley inside the muzzle.
buying a heavier pistol doesn't mean you will hold it steady, and can even have the reverse affect IMHO ;)

Hmmm....never thought that more weight might have the reverse effect.
A problem is that the pistol cocks from the top, hinges from the front: anything attached to the muzzle would probably have to be duct-taped to the lower part of the muzzle housing, or it would interfere with cocking.
Thanks for the idea!
How would I add weight permanently inside the muzzle?

I thought this comp. was for pistols that went "Boing" or "Twang", not "pump, pump, Phuut"
Cos' on first go I 'aint never gonna compete at this kinda level....
First practice today totalled 41 :o
But it was windy, and my sights were originally set for 15 yards, and i was feelin' kinda low and then the tortoise came haring past & put me off...

I've been practicing today with the 6 yard targets for the first time and best I can manage at the moment is lower 30's one handed with the HW40...but I am trying to shoot with both eyes open for the first time and I think I'm getting there...
Just agreed to buy an Original Mod 6 today so hopefully have that in time to try for the May competition.

When you open the the pistol as if you are cocking it ,at the front of the pistols body where it pivots is several small square appertures,I put fishing weights in these held in with blu tac;)not a very refined job but it worked in calming down the slight flip I got when shooting my HW40 which in all sense and purposes is the same pistol;)

You sir, are of course right.....
I was thinking 'bout the title of the thread rather than the original post.

You too, mate? I get really aggravated with myself, sometimes. :( But then, just once in awhile, I shoot a little better, and it makes my world a better place. :)
I think you have it right about the equipment, too. We both would probably be better practicing more with what we already have, than thinking a new pistol is the answer. My Beeman, I am sure, shoots way better than I will ever shoot it.
And I have the same problem with my hands! I tell my wife, "I can't dance, but my pistol sure can! " :D I thought maybe more weight might be the answer, but then some tell me otherwise.
In any case, I'm going to try that trick with lead fishing weights and see if it helps.
Cheers!

Insufficient rest between hand-cranking and shooting might be a major factor here:o
All that pumping, its gotta make ya a bit wobbly!
But if you get someone else to do the pumping for you - where's the sense of satisfaction in that?;)

As some pellets suit some guns better than others - how about sharing the gun & pellet info. with the scores?
That way we might lock onto a better combination than our current set-ups...

Thanks for including me. i had a go this morning, garage is ideal size (good job it's peeing down). First thought after printing some targets was "bugger me there small":D
anyway
A 18
B 18
C 22
D 21
So do i add these up? not sure what the 'ex 50' bit means. i can see that the max score per target is 50 but what does ex mean? probably being thick, but i'd like to do this correctly.
