What is the cheapest, most basic way of reloading shotgun cartridges
I quite fancy getting a .410 and a 20g but the cartridges are quite dear so am looking at a cheaper way of feeding them.

TIA :)

Hi,

Your cheapest option for 20g would be a Lee Loadall (http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/catalog/browse.cgi?1208986161.4444=/html/catalog/loadall.html).

I've stopped trying to find a cheap .410 reloader and have made the tools to reload them (including a roll crimper).

I've spent a good part of the day expanding the necks on some .303 Brit to turn them into .410 shotshells. The only fly in the ointment there is that I need large pistol primers and thanks to recent changes in the law I can't legally obtain them as I don't have a pistol calibre listed on my FAC. Phone-call to the FEO coming up tomorrow..........

I'd like to know what equipment you made you made for loading .410 as I'm pretty well tooled up with machinery and may like to go down that road myself.
TIA

Hi Sitsinhedges

Here is some information on making 410 cartridges from 303 rifle cases.

Just basic hand tools, capper/decapper and the roll-over tool, all easily made on the lathe. I'll put a pic up in a bit if you want.

I'm keen to do a small number of 12 bore cartridges using the once fired cases I have kept. Reason for this is I want a couple of dozen large shot, non-toxic subsonic cartridges - preferably not steel shot. If anyone can give me some pointers on best way to go I would be v grateful.

I'd be amazed if that runs to the end, but yes at the current price you are getting a lot. The RTO is worth the current bid.

The first step would be finding load data for a subsonic load, non-toxic shot is stupidly expensive, here's some prices... >>clicky (http://www.claygame.freeuk.com/Cat19Page12Shot.pdf)<<

Here you go! (http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x119/Bungle10/DSCF0677.jpg)

The cross pins on the RTO are not as square as they should be, if I do another it will only have a single bar going the whole width.

Thats good but I dont think I could build one just by the photo. Is there anywhere where I can find measured drawings?

I bet its one of those things that if you've got one to copy its easy, but if you've got one to copy you dont need to make one anyway :D

I had to make this from measuring a rolled crimp on an Eley Fourlong. The central section is the same as the inner diameter of the crimp and the same depth as the rolled edge to the overshot card, the outer channel is the diameter of the opened (fired) shell.

The profile at the base of the channel is rounded, the cross pin holes were drilled before the face of the tool was cut. Once the face cutting broke through the pin holes by about 1mm the brass pins were turned to fit and tapped in.

Next time I do one I won't use aluminium as it's a bitch to machine, particularly when you are using a thin cutting tool that snags and tears on anything. Brass next time!
