View Full Version : Resizing ....

Remington's own brass for my 260 has a reputation of not being very good..... So....
As I have some empty 243 brass, I've considered resizing to 260 by running it through my 260 dies. [Well lubed....]
I've read that a where the shoulder meets the neck, brass migration produces a donut of material that increases the diameter of the neck, that then needs tuning down to both reduce the diameter, and get the concentricity back. Which sounds both expensive and time consuming. Lapua make 243 brass, so on the face of it, there is one appealing aspect to the job. The one single part of this that isn't unattactive to me, is that the seemingly mandatory (hand) machined outside diameter won't blend in with the neck. Instead there will be an unattractive step, that might lead to failure or stiffness when withdrawing the case?
I've also read, (and been told), using 7mm-08 brass is a better solution, with less likelihood of the donut forming. That's okay, but them I'm using Winchester brass, not Lapua. Can't win? But the Winchester brass has a much better rep than the Remington stuff I've bought..... So looks attractive.
I seldom bring easy questions to the forum, and this is typically, [I]not easy. :D
Help ~ advise welcome of course. Links, gossip, old wives tales, any help or insight is welcome.

I've read domewhere that resizing causes serious problems with shoulder donuts. It was either on http://www.snipershide.com/ or savageshooters website (cant find the link at the moment).
That's one of the places (http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=548599) I got the info on 'donuts' .... ;)
Also, I can whack a few 7mm-08 cases in the post if you want to try a few rather than forking out. PM me & let me know.
PM on it's way mate. Bless yer!

Why not give whatever factory brass you have at the moment a go, assuming you have actually fired it!!
I have used Rem brass for the .243AI, .300winmag and the ackley and its no worse than any other

I use rem brass in my .260 and its ok out of 100 cases i have reloaded most of it several [4-5]times and have thrown 3 cases so far .
It was not worth using .243 then turning the neck as it gets thick, quicker cheaper and alot less hassle.
Got the brass from a chap off here direct from the states .

Okay, "I'm sold". :D :D
Remmy brass has supposed to have improved in quality, and since I bought the cases some time ago, I've nothing to lose really.
Will still give the re-sizing a go, just in case .... ;) :D

I don't think Lapua do 7mm-08 brass. I had to get Norma for mine (and you don't want to know how much that was over here!)
BTW, I still owe you money - but unless you tell me how much, I can't really pay you! :D

You are right. Was looking to 'up' from 243, but the dreaded "donut" was going to be a problem. This meant buying some tooling and was starting to look like an unattractive option. [Though someone on here recently paid for someone else to do this very thing to their 243 AI brass.....;)] Latest thinking is to use (say) Winchester 7mm-06 as anything might be better than the Rem stuff. :o
