Went to do a bit of rabbit shooting tonight.
I’m lucky to have two permissions that join, although the layout is a little disjointed. I got to my last area which is remote from the rest of the land, but on pulling in I saw an old boy wondering round at the bottom of the paddock looking at the wood. We have a caravan park close by, and I just thought great, a weekend holiday maker wondering where he shouldn’t be.
I thought, “I can well do without a confrontation tonight with a trespasser”, but I cant leave him wondering about either, so made my way over to him.

“Evening” said I, “can I ask what your doing”?

“Why” was the response? Oh I think, I have one of those.

“Well this is private land, and I’m about to start shooting, so it’s not the ideal place for a walk!”

“What you shooting” he asks.

I explain that I do rabbit control on these fields.
“Oh” he said, well I do know the owners, and in fact I own all that land over there and those woods.
“Ah Ha” I said, at least I can introduce myself to the neighbour, so if you see me about you know who I am.
Well he said, If you want to shoot the bloody rabbits on my side go right ahead.
He then proceeded to take me over to his land, and offered me a free run of about another 20 acres of paddocks and a large wood.
Chatted for about half an hour, and said I will pop back next week to sort the paperwork out.
I’m gob smacked that I went and challenged who I thought was a busy body, and have almost doubled the size of my shoot.

Strange life eh. :D:D

On the other hand he may have been impressed that you politely challenged someone wandering on land they did not own. So maybe he will feel pleased that he now has another pair of eyes keeping a check on his land.
Cheers, Phil

You know, that’s the thing. My existing land owners both say they like the idea of somebody mooching about in parts they don’t regularly go to, just to keep an eye on things. ;)

Chuffed to bits to have access to some woodland, as at the moment all I have is paddocks and hedges. Don’t get me wrong, I'm grateful for anything, and the environments are, shall we say, target rich. But a woodland will allow me to investigate a different type of hunting.
Can’t wait, and although he has given me verbal authority, I wont step a foot on his land without written permission, which I hope to sort with him Tuesday.
Happy days.:D:D
