My Daystate MKIII FT-R has always been a good shooter but never GREAT...with my USFT and Vanquish setting the FAC standard of drilling one little hole at 25yds, the benchmark was set. The FT-R would always throw a flyer or two when shooting groups and it recently got worse. After trying everything I could, it still would group like it used to. After all I went through with my Vanquish, I was very suspect of the skinny factory Daystate shroud and barrel so I sent the top end of the gun to Rich in Michigan to have an Anscutz barrel blank that I'd been saving for a while for just such an occasion...inside of a week, Rich machined the barrel, modified the barrel band to accept the new barrel and made a very nice brake for it!!! It arrived today and let's just say that it loves JSB Exacts(8.4gr) and will stack them at 25 yards just like my go to guns!!! :-) Thanks again to Rich in Michigan for such excellent work that was done incredibly quickly and affordably!!! It was funny, Friday I called him to get an update on how it was coming along and what the price was gonna be, he tells me, I dropped it off at the post office today, its coming to you Priority Mail! I was like ok, how much do I owe you?!?!? What a class act and tremendous resource for the airgunning community!!!

Regards,

Tony

but in the U.S. we get skinny barrels stuck inside of a skinny shroud that has only one barrel bushing, located at the receiver end of the shroud...as such, I believe barrel harmonics and turbulence are an issue in my gun...for whatever reason, the gun started clipping pellets on the endcap after a year or so of working fine!

I only have 30 yards at home, will try at the range on Wednesday hopefully...

Tony

It's strange that the problem only happened after a year...

I wish Daystate used better barrels and sturdier breach block on this model, although at least the newer models have a couple more screws.

Please can you post some 50+yd groups when you get the chance to try the gun???

especially with .177, this is my first solid year of FT, but I am very effective at 50+yards when it comes to feather or fur, lol, for whatever reason I focus better!!!:)

Naturally I will give 50yds a whirl, just wish I could bring it down to LD's in southern California as he as a 52 yard underground shooting tunnel for testing airguns!!!:D No plans to visit his house anytime soon though...

One of the best pcp airgunsmiths on our side of the pond has some observations when it comes to the FAC Daystates and Steyrs if the guns have issues with accuracy...he finds that the lead in to the barrels are often too tight and that the pellets get damaged/compromised in that initial lead in and the transition over the transfer port hole in the barrel.

When he gets them sent to him, he opens up the lead in slightly with a conical shape, finely polishing it and the transfer port hole area to remove burrs and smoothing out/removing the rifling that is in the lead in up to the transfer port hole...

I performed the same, to some degree on this barrel and my Vanquish(.177) which also had accuracy issues...

On my MKIII FT-R, there are 4 set screws attaching the barrel to the receiver and it seems relatively strong and stable but pales in comparison to say a BSA Hornet or Theoben Rapid breech in terms of stoutness.

Do your MKIII's come with 15 or 16 mm non shrouded LW barrels?

Tony

No - shrouded 12.7mm barrels.

No - shrouded 12.7mm barrels.

The European Market's guns had larger diameter barrels and Muzzle Flip Compensators on them...
