OK time to make a new purchase. I have identified a need for a full power CO2 pistol in .22 calibre, well that's what I told her anyway ;), and have narrowed the choice to the Crosman 2240 or the Sheridan EB22.

Apart from price, Sportsman Gun Centre are advertising the 2240 for seventy quid:eek: at the moment (current Gun Mart ad.) making it by far the cheaper, what else is there that makes one stand out from the other?

All comments appreciated.
thanks

The EB22 is smaller, the Crosman kicks its arse in every other department. It's better made in every way and can be tuned, customised and improved. Do what I did... get both.

I have owned and used both the Crossman & the Sheriden. The EB22 is all metal construction with Walnut grips and the most compact. It is also the most durable.

The 2240 is larger and has plastic components, including the sights, grips and bolt housing. Its construction is built to a very low price, as low as $40 in the US. It is however the best to shoot with a better sight picture and a better hold. Just don’t de drop it as it will fall to bits. It can be customised into a decent quality tool which will far out shoot the EB22 but at some expense and work.

Both are about 5.5 ft/lb out of the box on a warm day. The EB will last a lifetime in your fishing box or kitchen drawer. The 2240 will provide great shooting until it breaks.

Owned both, still have the Sheridan. You are dreaming if you think the Crosman is better built out of the box.

Got an EB22, love it. Apart from new grips and taking the bolt probe diameter to help gas flow doesn't seem to be a lot you can do to improve it (please someone prove me wrong..)

The 2240 seems to be something you can mod more succesfully and there have been some cracking models pictured in this section.

At £70 I might be tempted to invest in one, (Quick Eric slap me.....:D)

The sheridan is ok but nothing special. It's basically a Crosman design built to a lower standard. Strip it down and examine the parts! Yes the Crosman is cheap but for a few quid more becomes a way better gun. The walnut grips are crap with a single screw so the flop about, the sights are a bent piece of plate, it's painted over, has moulding seems and the barrel is glued on. It's way better than most C02 so i can forgive but it's still not great.

Thanks for the replies, it looks like you've helped me make the decision.
I'll buy the Crosman.................

................and then maybe the Sheridan later:D:D:rolleyes:

Hi Jef,

How much to you want to spend and what do you want to do with the pistol.

You get a lot more for your dosh if you buy from the States, suggest www.auctionarms.com, www.forthehunt.com, etc

The Crosman 2300s or 2300t may be of interest, in .177, around 4ft lb but a higher spec.

Check out this item

All the best

Well, got it today, a nice shiney new 2240, £70 from my local gunshop, I didn't even need to make the trip to Exeter. The only dissapointment was the packaging, no box :( just a clear plastic 'blister' pack that you have to destroy to open. I really hate this type of packaging

I've put ten pellets through it so far, first impressions?

not too heavy and very 'pointable'.
first five pellets grouped reasonably at 6 yds (within a 1 1/4" circle, single handed with sights 'out of the box')
trigger a bit heavy but predictable
plenty of scope for modifications

oh and LOUD, perhaps the first mod could be a mod

Should keep me occupied for a few months in the workshop.

Excellent value at seventy quid, Jeffery's a happy bunny today :):):)

Congratulations on your buy

I had a 2240, did some mods to it, fitted the steel bolt housing from the king ratcatcher, and fitted a trigger shoe, which helped with the trigger pull.

I tried loads of different pellets in it, found the best to be the Dynamic SN1 "tinnies", around 12 grain, powerful, shot flat & hit hard, very accurate. I was surprised, as all of my other pistols & rifles hated them!

I had a lot of fun with it & spent many hours kicking tin cans up the garden from 10 - 40 yards, eventually gave it to my brother as part of an exchange for something else, tried to get it back off him a while back, but the answer was a resounding NO! He was having far too much fun with it!

There are loads of good bits around for it, have a look at crooked barn and RB Grips in the US.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Regards

Aaaaagh! I've gone blind.
:D

Is this the one that went walkabout on its way to Jamie? If so I'm glad it turned up, it's too nice to be languishing in the hands of some thieving scrote who wouldn't appreciate it.

It certainly is, and now safe and sound in my little collection.

A beautiful pistol, congratulations. :)

May be too bright for New Orleans, though, with our semi-tropical sun. :D

By the way, New Orleans climate is officially described as "semi-tropical". But do you know what that means?

:D Here we joke that "semi-tropical" means that we sweat our asses off most of the time: but still get to freeze our asses off once in awhile! :D

Actually, it's beautiful here, most of the time, from November through April: cool to warm, with an occasional hot day, and an occasional cold one. I love it here that time of year.

May through October, it's sickeningly hot and humid. I'd rather be elsewhere then, if I could.
