O/U 12 gauge 28" field multichoke.
My first "proper" shotgun, beautifully crafted, lovely balance and relentlessly consistant, the exact opposite of me really :D :D
RRP was £1200, i got it new for £975, including 5 different chokes, hard and soft guncases and cleaning kit.
So far i've used it for sporting clays, skeet and field shooting of pigeons, crows and rabbitts.
AS i'm a relative beginner with a shotgun i've started with "cylinder" and "improved" chokes, this will drop birds stone dead out to 45 yards or so, using 30 G No 6 shot @ 1375 FPS, any more and it seems that the pattern is too wide.
With a tighter choke fitted(3/4 & full) and using No 5 shot i can drop Rabbitt and Hare instantly out to 50 or so yards.
Anyone else played around with different shot size/chokes etc ?
i'd be interested to hear your opinions

Nice gun :)
I leave my guns set at ¼ and ¾ which works well for all near and far shots.
I’d suggest that 50 yards on rabbit and hare is marginal.
Enjoy the gun :)

Hi Jack
No mate they haven't but have seen the model you are on about.
Pete
Ive had one since '92 and its a great shotgun - mine has the ported brls which can be a pain for the guy standing next to you (loud!)
Your 682 S/S should give you good service.

Cheers Jack gave it a good going on Sunday on the clays and glad i bought it, handles well and seems to suit me, its been 24 years since i did clays and its suprising what you forget :D
Pete
Had my silver pigeon for about a 12month now failed to find fault with it yet 28'' 1/4 + 1/2 find the shorter barrel a great deal better in the pigeon hide & it swings a bit faster  & also its a bit lighter than my mates EELL 30'' sporter.
cheers john :)

My mate is looking to buy a clay gun and we looked at a Silver Pigeon and an Onyx the other day. I must say the Onyx felt just right to me, but my friend had trouble deciding.
Any pointers guys as I'm a Browning man (wishing I'd gone Italian I hasten to add)??

Hi mate
I got the Beretta from THE "COUNTRY STORE" in Sawston
The gun comes with the hard case and 5 chokes as standard, the slip and cleaning kit are pretty basic but good enough for my needs. The gun was one he had on the shelf, i'm not convinced you would get a similar price if you ordered one in.
I have spent a few quid there as well so i guess that helps.
Give them a visit, they are good blokes

Pete I'm sorry I can't remember the exact price, but both of the guns we saw were around the £1000 mark.
If he decides to buy one I'll tag along and have a look for you.
Sorry to be as much help as a chocolate teapot M8.

I went last month and got rid of three guns so I could hopefully get a shiny new silver pigeon field, i drooled over it and then the guy handed it to me and it was useless for me,i was struck dumb, the gun i liked the look of so much was terrible to swing and mount,so I went round the shop and tried a few out till I had the choice down to a Miroku Mk70 sporter or a white onyx sporter or a 686e sporter, the Miroku had poor finish in the wood to metal fit although it was a good fit, the onyx had the extra wood which is a kind of resin finish that looks like walnut but when it gets used it gets dull and lifeless looking,I settled on a 686e sporter (30" barrels)with the thickest butt pad and it fits me well just the same as my well fitting Urika sporter. It cost £1000 and the Silver pigeon was £950 and in my mind a better gun but it never fitted so no matter what get a gun that fits,I spent years struggling with a beautiful early Lanber field the likes of which the shop has never seen. The only trouble with my new purchase is it is not a game or field gun and the weight is tiring over a whole day,s walked up rough shootin so I will restrict it to clays or hide pigeon shooting for the meantime. That left me needing a gun to walk about with that was dependable as whisky yes that beautiful liquid that is near impossible to put down.Well I found her, a little Baikel S/S non ejector(27" barrels), i drove 7 hours there and back to north of Aberdeen, lovely condition and solid and tight but dare i say i paid £115 for her and ok It was probaby about £50 too much and the drive there but it is a keeper as they say and folk have said whetever I paid for it it was worth it as it mounts and swings like best english ( sods the lot of U ) and I agree, the next saturday i shot a great boltin rabbit and a smacking right woodcock and missed the next coz i forgot about the second trigger but hey I cant fault the old girl and it says made in the USSR so I know its not as new as it looks eh ? so whatever you pay for a gun make sure it fits you as I have one expensive gun and one cheap gun both of which suit me and both are better than the lanber I had for so long. (I would still love a silver pigeon though) as for choke I tend to use fairly open chokes when I can such as cylinder and quarter with 30g of no6 from a hide and for clays, i tend to leave chokes alone and get on with shooting as changing them adds more complications that are best left to the eggberts.

Pete sadly only shouldered it but it fit really well.
OOI list price is £1195 and Colchester Shooting Centre are selling one for £950.00 new - the 12g 30" m/c sporter.
Which model are you being offered, game or sporting?
I'd say £650 sounds good if it's in excellent nick.

I was led to believe that the 686 white onyx "sporter" is MDF covered with a veneer of some sort  , although the field model is proper wood.
i cant swear to it but i'd check it out if i were you.

Basically the white onyx is the same as my 686e only the look of the receiver is different,I preferred the white onyx but the sporting 30" model he had was the extra wood version and Id rather have plain laquer on my walnut rather than the wood effect resin coat that is on the extra wood,If it had been the normal version of white onyx I would have had bought it. They mount and shoot well with a good sight plain, highly recommend them. The only main difference in the sporter (compared to field guns) are the sight rib is wider, the forend, hand grip and cheek piece are slightly thicker than the field models and are generally slightly heavier also.

I'd go for it Pete if it fits you right - you can't go wrong mate. They hold their value well s/h and last forever (if anything like the older models).
Might be worth checking prices withthese guys (http://www.colchestershootingcentre.co.uk/shotguns.htm)
Let us know how you get on. (I do love spending someone else's money :D :D )

I'll tell you what Pete you've got me wanting one now, and I was perfectly happy with my Browning 425 Grade Cr*p until this post came along ;) .
Tell you what, I'll get my mate to buy one as he hasn't had a chance to get a gun yet and then I'll give you the lowdown. Hopefully he won't shoot as well with it as my Browning and I'll suggest a swap :) .
Cunning plan methinks :D

Try this one too for the ladies (sorry darling - you know what I mean) Same great quality and weighs bugger all. Around a grand with multi chokes and a bit less with fixed. Will last a long long time - just like the excellent Silver Pigeon or any others of the 68x range. My missus can handle 3.5 kgs for 50 shots but anything heavier tires her quickly.
Sportsman were doing deals on Berrettas - especially if you want a fixed choke - I dont want to mess about with multis either. Save a lot of money on the less well selling fixed choke and HAGGLE! Good luck

I havent shot clays for over 11 years now. Used to use a trusty 682 myself as a teenager - loved it. Looking to get back into clay shooting now and am always drawn to berettas. Dont really want to spend too much on first gun though.
Simon.
I shoot a 120 yard jackdoor and killed it clean dead.
No you didn't.
I myself have a SilverPigeon, 20gauge, it's the badgers nadgers :D A lot of people seem to have trouble switching between s/s and o/u but i have two guns one - a kestrel for rough days when i wouldn't want the SP to get damaged. Seem to shoot equally well with each, the only thing was the first day on the SP with just the one trigger took a little getting used to but now i can happily interchange :)
