Just a little info and review of a pretty little gun I have in my gun safe.
It is a lever action rifle made in the U.S.A (New York) and based on a traditional lever action. This heritage has quite a history.
I enjoy possum (and pest) hunting down here in New Zealand. I will choose one or two of my guns on a shoot depending on the location. Sometime a FX Typhoon .22 and a rimfire such as my Ruger 1022.
There are times that I felt that the 1022 semi auto was a little demanding for safety reasons (eg when having a shooting buddy with me) and having two or three guns to manage so I decided that a lever action was a good choice to own and use. Means total control of what is "up the spout" at any given time.
I fell in love with the Henry on first sight and then had to track one down to buy. I eventually found one locally.

The lever action is smooth and solid. A very well built mechanism and a very nicely finished rifle with a beautiful walnut stock.
The gun looks and feels small ..until put alongside the Ruger. This shows the barrell are almost same length from the receiver. The Henry does have a thinner profile in the stocks though which makes it very nice to have i nthe hand.
It was very fussy as to what it liked to eat. In the end - it preferred hi velocity rounds and not subs or standards. (which I would have preferred).
Whatever.... it is a great little gun and more than accurate enough for the purpose to which I put it to. Close range hunting.

Indeed, a fine rimmie. Mine was the first rimmie I bought.

Good review, thanks. I've been considering getting a Henry. I'm a little disturbed to hear that it's ammo-fussy, though.

They are a pain in the arse to source here (Standard model; the fancy gold ones are available)
I do not know what the situation is like now, but I wanted one last year and couldn't find any.
Shot a few of the Golden Boy models which were very nice. Excellent trigger and very accurate at 25m, although the pot metal receiver is a bit disappointing.
They are well made though. I ended with a 50/60's pump-action Winchester instead, and the fit isn't too far off, although the materials let the Henry down slightly.
Retail price was peanuts for normal U.K prices.

I have found all my rifles (including the airguns) to be a bit choosey on what they like to eat. ie. Brand and type.
I know that other Henry owners have found their Henrys have a totally different preferences to mine. eg they will shoot .22 short, long and LR.
Maybe I just have a higher accuracy demand. :D
BTW: My Ruger is kind of fussy as well butthen again... its fun shooting them all in and finding out what to use. Once you know...you know.

Do you find the Henry fussy in the sense that it won't function at all with certain types of ammo? Or just that it won't shoot as accurately as you'd like it?

My Henry loaded and ejected all and any round (Short, Long & LR) that I tried perfectly. Some were just not accurate orconsistent enough. (I also had the Ruger to compare them to)
The rounds it does like are accurate and consistently so. They happen to be HV rounds.
CCI minmags LR
Winchester Powerpoints HP LR
I would have liked to have found a sub but it wasnt to be. Other Henry owners have found theirs will shoot subs accurately.

OK: that I can deal with.
Every gun shoots different ammo differently, but it disturbs me if a manually operated firearm won't function with any and all ammo of its caliber.
With semiautos, it doesn't bother me so much. I call them "jammomatics", anyway! :D

Those photos are excellent & the rifle looks lovely. All my .22 shooting is with a moderator, though, so I don't think a lever action is for me :(

I meant to mention that in my review.
My shooting was peviously all with suppressed rifles.
I realised instantlythat the Henry was unable to fit one to so I had hoped it would work well with sub sonic shorts or subsonic LRs. (That was not meant to be)
Anyway ...after a couple of hunts I decided what the hell and enjoyed using the HV rounds. Mkaing a bit of noise and enjoying the lever action.
In a couple of my more sensitive shooting locations ...I just pull out the Ruger (supressed) or the .22 FX Typhoon (supressed PCP).
Guns are always a bit louder to the guy pulling the trigger.

that looks very nice, how quickly can you reload a second shot if needed?

That looks EXACTLY like a lever gun I used to own made by Ermawerke in Germany. Right down to the 2 screws on the receiver and the scope rail machined into the receiver top.
I also remember that the receiver was deeply blued and the action was incredibly smooth compared to the Marlins I handled on a regular basis (I worked at Leslie Screwitt).
A real tasty little gun.

Lovely looking rifle, is that hammer spur an aftermarket jobbie?

Hammer Spur is an "Uncle Mikes " part.

Added some pictures to my review because I customised it a little and fitted a perfect scope.
I looked hard for a scope that was appropriate, (right range etc) and a good look for a lever action rifle. Generally it is considered sacriledge to put a scope on a lever action!
The Weaver 2.5-7 x28 is ideal. This scope has bright clear optics and a superb double X reticle that stands out against light and dark BGs. The brightness defies the incoming lens size 28mm . It appears to have no light loss discernible to the eye.
Hundreds of rounds have failed to disturb its POI and I have never had to adjust it.
One reason this scope fits well with this is rifle is that I stripped and polished the receiver and the metal barrel bands. Silver on silver with a black duotone look.
Hope you like it as much as I do. Almost too pretty to hunt with but I do so anyway. (Thats why I bought it)
