Hi All
Im just looking at getting some new pellets for close range to 30/40 yards ratting, as im now using .177 (only ever been used to .22) im after a good hollow point pellet that will be accurate for as far as possible
Ive looked on Uttings & there are quite a few, so your opinions would be great
H&N Baracuda hunter or Hollow Point
Crossman Destroyer or Hollow point or wadcutter??
BSA Intercepters
Bisley pest Control
Cheers

Only ever used the RWS hollow points but they did the job, some tend to open up group wise so i kept my ranges sub 30yds.

Any in your list will do as long as your rifle shoots them accuratley, which i doubt will be possible out at 40 yards more like 20-25 yards with those pellets
Personaly if i were shooting rats at that range i would just use a heavyweight dome head..

For 30-40yd ratting I always just use my standard roundheads (Air Arms Diablo Field) , just use the most accurate pellet you have and forget about the hollow points / flatheads , only time I've ever used flats/hollows has been for inside work where I'm shooting sub 20yds

30 to 40 yards is not close range.
Hollow points will loose accuracy at a much closer distance than a dome.
You will need to find the best hollow for your barrel but it is unlikely that you will get a clover leaf group at the range you mention.
In my barrel, I am pushing it at 30 yds but they really like my barrel - even in .177, the poi band is much more marked than a dome.
You need to try as many in your barrel as you can - it is absolutley no different to any other pellet selection. Until you have shot it, you wont know if your barrel likes it and what max range you can justafiably squeeze a shot off at something with a sistolic

Ratting close range is 10 yards LOL, not 30 to 40 ;) thats Rat sniping!!!
Bismags work well, had 120+ rats over 4 outings using an N550 with sony doubler on a .177 MFR, zero is 20 yards and I shoot 15 to 30 with 1/2 kill zone 15 to 27 so I just lift up slighly on the longest shots, most are 20 to 25 yards so its just dead on all the time. Had no issues at all with the smaller calibre, the shooting buddy commented at the thump a .177 Bismag makes when it hits a rats head, had no issue with heart/lung shots either with 1 shot per kill and no runners.
Had 12 last night with this combo, best shot of the night was a 30yarder right between the eyeballs...

That sort of distance is long range, personally I wouldn't shoot anything live past 30y, but maybe I'm not that good. Don't consider anything other than a quality dome head, you'll need all the accuracy you can get as you don't have a lot of power to make up for it with sub 12 air.

I have just tested 3 .177 hollow points in my wine rack HW80 at 25 yrds using AA fields as a control pellet
I have only completed the accuracy test, i have yet to do the penetration test
tested was BSA interceptor,RWS super-h-point,H&N Terminators
Condition's lightish side wind. At lest 5 pellets put through when changing brands before shooting at target
10 shots
Control pellets AA fields grouped all but 1 under the size of little finger nail 1 pellet just out side
1st BSA interceptor sub 1 inch group cheapest pellet tested
2en H&N all most 1inch group.. disappointed with this pellet as over 3 times the price of the BSA
3ed RWS super-h-point ..fail...2 inch+ group
remember a different gun may give different results (although i have yet to have a gun that not shoot well with AA fields)
in the past i have found that with sub 12ftlb its not the shape of the head but which pellet is made from the softest lead that deforms the most

Depends on the gun. If you are using a springer a heavy weight pellet is not a good idea, best with a medium weight. 30 yards do not use hollow points or flat heads, use a good quality domed, they are more stable, more accurate and deliver more power!

Thanks for the info, Ive learn't something new about the .177 cal, as I said ive only ever shot .22 at close range (to 20yrds)
, I do always like to get as close as poss but I have an area between a bank & some haylage bales which is a snipers ally, so may have to be at some distance away
I had a longtail between the eyes last night with AA fields & will most likely stick to the dome heads but will get some of the BSA interceptors for indoors
I used to have the whole setup with NV etc but it got sold, Im now putting the band back together:D

Just test for the most accurate pellet in the rifle, and stick to it, whatever shape the head is, in both my .177's it is Powapell's.

I used to use mainly Crosman Premiers at 10.5 grain through my .177 cal FX Royale and HW100 with the occasional tin of Daystate Heavies.
Now that no longer have any PCP's and use a .177 cal springer , the 10.5 grain pellts are perhaps too heavy so I use lighter pellets.
As mentioned you should try a few different pelet types to find which are best suitedd to your airguns.
Good Luck.
