It is with great sadness that I have to report the sudden death of David Baines.

David died this afternoon of a heart attack. I am sure everyone will join me in sending our deepest sympathy to his family.

I will give more details as they become available.

Dave was one of the giants of the sport. Active with Redfearns, NEFTA, BFTA and UKAHFT. He was also a good friend. Dave will be sorely missed by his family and the sport is vastly poorer today. Nobody I knew worked harder for our sport.

Please do not ring his wife Pauline as her family are not with her yet. My deepest sympathies are with her at this moment.

Redfearns Turkey shoot will still go on on the Saturday - Dave would not have wanted or expected anything less.

I was shocked to get a call about this a little earlier. I don't remember when I first met Dave, it was several years ago but I remember both him and Pauline as fixtures, so to speak, at the BFTA shoots and then at the UKAHFT shoots as well. He was a bridge across the two forms of our shooting sports and that was good. He will be remembered in SWEFTA and our Dartmoor Marksmen club for his input into the Grand Prix that we hosted this summer. He will be truly missed both as a good sportsman and as a good friend to us all. My condolences to Pauline and the family.

I'm another of those who Dave probably didn't know from Adam but in my first season of competition shooting this year I shot two courses that Dave had set and it has been obvious even to me that the man was a master of his 'trade'. That he had a great sense of humour was also obvious from that experience (although I may not have laughed much at the time).

As an ageing and increasingly selfish individual I gained a lot of satisfaction from knowing that the organisation of my new found sport was in the extremely capable and willing hands of the likes of Dave Baines.

The loss to the airgun world is nothing compared to that being suffered by Dave's family and my thoughts are with them in this time of great pain.

Again, only just got to a PC after hearing this terrible news.

When Sparky told me last night I couldn't believe what he had told me, I was numb. I met Dave back in 2003 and he always had the time to talk and advise newcomers. He even offered to lend me his rifle for one of the rounds, this was after only just meeting me.

I held Dave in high esteem with his approach to air rifle shooting and his diplomacy in the shooting world. He will be missed and my condolences go out to Pauline and the family.

There is no good time to pass away but it always seems to be harder at Christmas.

As already mentioned, everytime I see a 45yard, 50 ft high target that I have to pull a muscle or 2 to shoot, I will be thinking of Mr Baines.

Deepest Sympathy :(

Sad news indeed...........

I have a special memory of David, arriving back at the Daystate Booth from the "underwater gun" episode, dripping wet with a lopsided grin on his face. It wasn't until later that we found out that he was not a good swimmer.

That was the essence of the man, always up for anything, helpful and full of his unique brand of dry humour.

Not only was he an excellent ambassador for our sport, but also an excellent person where it was a delight and a privilege to know him.

He will be sadly missed.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Very sad news to hear at this festive and family time of year. The sport as lost an ambassador and true father figure.

What a tragic loss to the sport of Airgun shooting, to his family & loved ones. He was known all round the country for being one of the nicest, most knowledgable men you could hope to meet. At Redfearns this year he told me eveything that I needed to know about a scope I was thinking of buying in 1 minuite that would have taken ages to find out by myself. His reputation down here on the South coast was a strong as it was all over the country for those of us who have had the pleasure of shooting his courses. Whenever we see a really tall tree we think of Dave climbing up a 30 yard high ladder with a target in his hand & a big grin on his face.

My condolences to his wife & family in thier time of loss.

They say that when a giant Redwood falls over in the woodlands of America, it doesnt make a sound..................

I don't agree - one of the largest trees in the forest has fallen and I wish I could turn back time and do something about it.

I didn't know David, but I know of his endeavour and unquenchable enthusiasm. This is a rare quality and the gap in the canopy will be difficult to replace.

I have lost many of my close friends of late and as I get older, the phrase "there go I but for the grace of god" is now familiar.

This is sad news.

Maybe even the good lord won't get a clear round now David is setting the course in what I hope is a far better place.

It will be hard to imagine turning up for a NEFTA shoot and not see Dave there amongst us and hearing of the fantastic scores he was capable of. Someone I had just gotten to know but an inspiration in both his abilities and enthusiasm, R.I.P.

My name is Sarah Hirst; I am David's eldest daughter. Never before have I seen such devotion & sympathy by so many people some of whom never met my dad. Your words of kindness at such a sad time have overwhelmed myself & my family, we would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. I am sure you will agree that my dad will be missed by many, but the lives that he touched are better for meeting him.

Sarah, thankyou for taking the time to post at such a difficult time.
You know, better than any of us, how your Dad affected those around him.

It was an honour to have met him, and I am sure his example will continue to inspire us. As has already been posted, he will be fondly remembered every time we see a target set impossibly high in a tree.

Best wishes to your and your family.

I have just found out at the NEFTA Closed shoot, I am still in shock.

I will remember him as one of the best FT course setters there has ever been, his laugh, eating spam out of the tin using the lid, his gunsmithing skills ( with a hammer) knocking targets over when he never hit the disc, there are too many memourable moments to list.

All the best Dave, we will not see your like again, but I am so glad to have known you.

Having only just got myself registered with AirgunBBS, I would like to express my great sadness at hearing the news of Dave's sudden death. He was a very nice man and a top ambassador to our sport.
I have only known David for several years, but he was always very willing to help me with my shooting. It was a great privilege to assist him in the building of this years 'Showdown' and 'British Masters' Course at Newbury back in September 2006. I would also like to pass on my condolences to Pauline and Family at this very sad time.

It was with great sadness I clicked on this thread - the subject line - Dave's name with middle initial looked very omnious - and indeed my worst fear was borne out.

Much has already been said about Dave as a friend, shooter and family man and its all so very true.

He'll be sorely missed.

my sincere condolencies to his family.

I have only just come on here after a long time away due family commitments.
I am deeply shocked at the news of Davids sudden death especialy so close to christmas.
My sincere condolences go out to his wife.

I have known David for a few years now since becoming a member at Redfearns and always knew him as a very passionate man in our sport.
He was always friendly and helpfull and was always ready to help anyone who needed it.

He layed courses, always up and down trees and was known of country wide.
He strived to create an ever more challenging shot.

He will be missed by many and all at our club.

Im still in shock at the news.

If anyone knows when the funeral is i would be gratefull if they could let me know so i can attend and pay my respects.

A brilliant bloke, true gent and ambassador to our sport.

Rest in peace Dave

The best friend anyone could ever have is Dave. No matter what the problem Dave would always have an answer or solution. Even when not well himself he was always there to lend a hand to others. Without Dave i would never have had the chance to field target shoot, he helped me get a gun that suited my disability, helped me set it up and maintain it, even heped me round the course. I will never forget the breakfasts we have shared on the way to shoots. God bless, rest in peace.
my condolences pauline. a great bloke that will be greatly missed.

A MASSIVE shock and a terrible loss to us all. A cracking guy, for me his upright digit target was a corker with the kill zone at the end. They do say only the good go early, this being is a case im point.

I see him in my imagination up a long ladder telling St Peter how to set the mother of all courses! It should be quite a show when we get there. Dave's memory will live for as long as we keep thinking back to those great times we shared together - I remember a lot of events, both BFTA and UKAHFT, all around the UK.
