Paul,
In my experience with our dedicated NV rifle scopes you should get the following:
come on then guys whats the difference in the ranges on the infra red illuminators
50mw Don't do one
75mw Don't do one
100mw 80 Yards
450mw If this is the ATN one then the actual output of this is 75mW
just how far can you see with these on a gen 1 unit
thanks paul
Cheers

The scope i have was bought from Clive at nv scope,s and at 100 yard,s you can just make out the shape of the rabbit and it,s eye,s not sure how much further then 100 yard,s you can shoot ,but would you what to . When out with the nv scope on my gun the vast amount of shot,s are well under 100yard,s and most of the time you are far to close .;)

"450mw" or 75mw will be good for about 35-45yds on an atn 390 imo.

This is a Gen I scope? At 2.5x mag?
I'd be surprised if I could see a rabbit at 100 yards at 2.5 mag in broad daylight, much less at night. ;) Mind you, I'm not using young eyes.... :D

Around my expectation too. And I think the Paladin 390 has about the brightest (Gen I) tube I've ever seen.
Of course regardless to what you can see, NV'ers should be able to ensure they can see a safe backstop to any shot taken before they shoot.
Safety first.

At that range and mag....how do you know it's not a hare?
And on that note, I'm pretty sure you can't lamp hares for shooting, does that cover ALL artificial illumination (including IR) or just visible light?
Thanks

Just found my own Hare answer, was looking at Hares Act (1848) hadn't noticed Wildelife and Countryside Act (1981)
Apologies.
My mistake.
However..... surely the possibilty at that range and mag of it being a hare and not a rabbit, would bring into doubt any range estimation.....unless you somehow laser range find, or know the range due to the lie of the land or something. It could be further than you think.
Does this make sense or am I talking ****?
Pete:)

Pete,
Very good point. I think you answered it with range estimation.
I've personally used our 2.5x Gen1 dedicated scope on a .22 rimfire with additional IR illumination out to 75 yards and found recognition not to be a problem, knowing the lie of the land very well. Also the lower magnification has a wider field of view, also the optical design of the scope gives again a very wide field of view so depth perception is very good.
Also the lower magnification actually helps with range estimation as the view you are looking at is very similar to what the eye naturally sees...allbeit 2.5x bigger.
It's a very wide view, compared to the 'tunnel vision' you get with a day scope, even of the same magnification.
Cheers

Range estimation with NV is notoriously difficult. Whatever you are using.
The first company to get a range estimation feature in an NV scope is going to make a fortune. If it's been done already (for the military say) the manufacturer IS making a fortune. ;) :D
Using one eye to gauge distance is hard in daylight, and it why predatory animals (like humans) have two forward facing eyes.
I've tried over the last couple of years to 'work around' this by using the same dayscope on all my rifles, so I can gauge distance by the apparent size of the quarry in my scope. I know other people who do this, notably HFT comp' shooters who use x10 mag scopes for hunting.
Same goes for NV with an 'add on' system. I gauge distance by the size of the rabbit at x16 mag, or size of the fox by x16 mag.
I can't see there's any way you can determine the difference between a rabbit and a hare at night 100 yards away with a 2.5 mag scope. Even less chance with NV...... [Which has lower resolution than a MK 1 eyeball.]
