Go Gen 1 but spend some dosh on an additional illuminator as it improves the image considerably.
You mean a laser. Either go for variable power (as the output of some lasers can be bright enough to cause the NV unit to flare) or go infrared.
Illuminators and lasers can add a fair old whack to the cost.
I am asking if a lamp fitted with a dimmer set to a barely visible glow with the human eye will do or if it will damage the NV's night optics (which I suspect is the case).

Well, I'm getting on very well with my yukon NVRS-F NV scope. It retails for £570 but I got it off evilbay for £260 new from someone who had it as an unwanted present. Worth investigating the new range of digital NV attachments from Dogfox (gbsights.co.uk) and the Merlin Gen 1 add on from nightvision supplies. Check out too "night vision gear uk" and "nightvisionscopes". All offer great products. A few of the guys who run the online sites post here and they're great for information.

Firstly, range finding with NV is notoriously difficult, so .22 at 12ft/lbs isn't going to help you much, whatever NV you buy. Might be betting to use a lamp 'cos you get to use both eyes? If it's not too late, a .177 provides a flatter trajectoru so is more forgiving if you don't get the range 100% correct.
BUT, if you want NV and only have one rifle, (and owning a a lovely Airwolf suggests you might only have the one), then you'll be needing an add-on system.
Not sure what you mean by red dot system, unless you mean the low mag Aimpoint jobbies? You will be using this for a ratting job maybe?
A few more details would be helpful. Try my profile for phone numbers if it'll save time.

Perhaps by red dot thingy, you mean a laser which can be used together with some low end nv monoculars to provide an aiming point?
As Baldie has said, try to give us a bit more info.
