As title suggests im new to NV

I have been looking and reading for months

Finaly bought a second hand NV

a Youkon gen1, first night out tonight 5 shots fired 3 dead rabbits, there werent many rabbits out tonight so a lot of walking around which brings me to my first point.

I suggest to you to choose a light NV scope if you think with lamping you often see where your going before you get there, you may spot a rabbit then move in well with NV you see nothing at all unless your eye is near the scope.

Which means walking around scanning areas with the rifle shouldered.

I use a Theoben Rapid 7 and its not the lightest rifle, you could say my upper body now feels a bit worn.

keep a spare set of batterys in the pocket because as i found out tonight its a pain having to walk back to the car because you can notice batterys are getting low.

and like tonight if all else fails and there are not rabbits, have a look around tonight i watched a badger for about 5 mins before it got a bit close for my liking so i made a noise and she trotted away over the fields.

Thats the first time i have ever seen a badger whilst out shooting and i have been shooting for 10 years, the only other ones i have seen have been dead road kill ones or on the TV.

it was nice to see.

Thats all from me looking forward to my next night out with the new NV toy

It is a different world at night.

I've watched bats flying inches off the ground hunting for bugs in the past. Amazing scene. AND been scared ****less watching a badger trotting toward me. ;) :D

The weight problem is an issue. I gave up the best shooting A/R I ever owned for the same reason. (Sadly). .22LR is much lighter. ;)

We now use Yukon Ranger [link in homepage] that means less shouldering. Ideal solution though dose cost nearly £300. But comes with 3 year warranty though, which helps. ;)

Closest i got was about 20 meters i guess, but i must admit i wasnt trying to be like a infantry soldier "been there done that". i would imagine you could get a lot closer if you used fieldcraft to the best.

Interesting thing though, the second one i shot was 55 rough paces which i thought was pretty good as its the first time i have used NV on a Air rifle.

question for anyone?

Do rabbits run from badgers? reason i ask this field is normally full, with the badger sniffing about i saw 2 and they were way to far away.??

Badgers are omnivores. A full grown (healthy) rabbit hasn't got much to fear from badgers as they move quickly, but they might rightfully give them a bit of a 'wide birth' to ensure a good headstart. ;)

From what I've read (not what I've seen) young rabbits would be eaten.....

good idea this post i can remember feeling the same about my first nv .
its a bug that bites you though and you will soon learn to operate the hole setup in the most comftable way for you .
i think knowing your shoot like the back of your hand helps alot . you will soon find you might not even shoulder your rifle between hot spots .

other methods like sitting up and shooting the rabbits as they leave the hedge line on to the feild , might work better with your set up .

unless your rapiod is fac it probably is to heavy for feild walking with nv .
and aa s200 or similar is a better choice for light acurate rifle .

in the next 18 months i bet you have built a rifle scope /nv combo just for night work :D

That's exactly what I did, Jack! Despite being an Add-On fan I have one (not very pretty:p) gun for night work only. It has a synthetic stock as they do take a bit of a thrashing out at night.
Still use my little 'carbine' a lot though but that's the benefit of Add-On systems.

I seem to remember one chap here (about a year ago ?) was actually being followed by a Badger, he was quite worried about it! We reckoned he'd taken a snack out with him & the 'Killer Beast' could smell food, thereafter it was waiting for him each night.
