 this is on a gen1 merlin.

Okay, number 1 :-
Bushnell trophy 3-9x40 reparallaxed down to about 20 yards on 3x mag £175 UK price

number 2 :-
a JSR 6x32AO with the parallax on 20 yards on 6x mag £40 UK price

Take a guess as to which one is clearer and brighter by a large margin
If I put the mag up on the bushnell it gets really poor too. So I guess I'll be using a 32mm objective lens scope for NV then.
I wonder how this can be?
And I also wonder if a JSR 3-9x50AO would be even better

Different scopes behave very differently, it's well known that it doesn't follow the price! You need to try before you buy, or ask the lads in the know what's they've tried and works best.

thats because the £40 jsr has no coatings on the lenses and so allows 100% of the ir light through.

the AO will help a lot too;)

did you wake up in a cold sweat thinking about laser illuminators and gen2 Matt?:D

No, lack of money put that on hold :o

Mind you, very little wrong with my current set up. Took Darren out last night, his comment was "that's 100 times better than your last kit".

Its those damn lasers, they'd make a plastic bisley 4x20 work well enough :D
