'ello eveybody (or anybody).

Does anyone have a review (or view) of using the BSA Ultra as a hunting weapon?

I understand the potential limitations on lugging around pumps and stuff to refill the canisters as this can be a bit of a pain, but that aside....you views would be welcome (again!).

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi,

It's a superb little gun for hunting.

Forget hide and vehicle shooting - to classify it just for that would be to underestimate a great bit of kit.

I've had mine for about 15 months or so and highly regard it. Light. Pointable. Accurate. And deadly.

John Bowkett can do a number of tweaks if you want to upgrade.

It just so happens that I've just completed a review for a magazine - otherwise I'd like to say more here.

But I'd better not steal my own thunder!

HTH (what little there was ;))

Exactly as Mike says, i shall follow.

The Ultra (Own one myself in .22) is a superb little carbine.

Accuracy: Pellet on pellet at 30 yards for me (with Bipod). As accurate as rifles 3 times the price. The rifle packs just as much punch too.

Weight: As Mike said, its really light. Perfect for carrying arounds woods and shruberry (Sp?).

Shot Count: At approx 35-40 full power shots (.22) (Or Approx 30 in .177), the Ultra is a good little carbine, John Bowkett can put a new air cylinder in it which will give you around 40 shots in total in .22 i think.

Filling: Filling is done by either a stirrup pump or divers bottle (BSA supplya quick fill adapter with the rifle.)

If you're looking at buying one, I say go for it. You won't regret it.

The silencer that comes with the rifle, is a tad rubbish, but the purchase of a Weirhauch or Logun silencer (1/2" UNF) will solve this.

Single shot or Multishot?

The multishot version of the Ultra is about £80 more expensive than the SS version. With the MS version you get a 10shot magazine.

Welcome to have a look at mine if you're close enough.

I had one Blueprinted by the man himself, and whilst it was with him he lengthened the air tube. Can now get 50 shots with very little variation. Had mine in the sale section but having used it the other day to great effect am seriously thinking of keeping it. If ever you are up my neck of the woods you can come and have a go with it

Cracking little gun, my super ten packed in on its first shot at the first round of NEFTA so I shot it withh a .22 Ultra with an unzeroed scope and once I had sussed where it was shooting I managed a Fairly respectable score as Finni wiil back up.
Shot count is not brilliant but how many shots do you want when hunting ?Put a weihrauch silencer on it and its the perfect lamping gun, light, very accurate and quiet.........buy one !!!!...Andy..:)

Thanks for all your input it is much appreciate... honestly.

Unfortunately I've just joined a local club and was offered an Air Arms S200 with mod at a bargain price today which I bought!

Talk about being fickle eh!

First I wanted a springer, so started looking at all the £200 ones offered and asked for advice on this forum and was told I'd be better getting something like a AA TX200 or a HK second hand. Made an offer on the forum for one that was for sale - but that's another story.

Saw that the BSA Ultra might be in the same sort of league (please don't knock me if my thought processes on this might be a bit squiffy - I am new to this game!:D)

But was made an offer I couldn't refuse! ;)

So now I can go hunting bunnies in style - does anyone know how to make them stand still : confused:???

hi mate, youve got a good gun in the S200.....light, accurate, and quiet...... excellent at doing everything, targets and hunting....although no way as near as quite as a Ultra with weihrauch MOD:D....

ive just brought a Ultra, and it really is a great piece of kit.... alot of people unfairly scoff at em....... mostly Air Arms owners:p(im aloud to say that as im one)........most critism is=-

shot count=- in .22 you can get 45+ full power shots.... and a few under power plus (small change in poi).....not too bad and gives you a break in between shooting to....

cocking system=- this is great, as the rifle can be easily cocked and it means that you have a doubly safe rifle until you want to shoot it (tis easy to cock on aim too)....also its easy to uncock and render safe if the shot is lost.....its not fiddly in the slightest, good size breech too to roll a pellet into (on the single shot).......too....

its light and "mass centralised" too, i had a go with a mates s200 and found that with a mod on the end can make it wobble a bit (quite long and light) whereas i found the Ultra more compact and with or without the mod it doesnt alter the balance too much, great for standing shots:cool: and deffo suits my shooting style.....

also what sold it for me is that its a bit "quirky" and is different to all the other rifles at my club and to what ive got/had already.........

sure my next guns gonna be a S400 in the near future;) along side my TX but the main thing is that the Ultra is still gonna be kept as its a awesome, underated piece of kit and a breath of fresh air........

good luck with the rabbits.....

I took my Ultra in for some work doing on it and the gun smith did not think the gun would be any good (too small and build quality unknown to him). After just 15 minutes he decided that he is going to stock them! I put pellet upon pellet at 35 yards (.22), okay the shot count is not high but the accuracy far out ways the low'ish shot count (but what do you expect from a carbine of this size?). It is ULTRA compact and very, very pointable. So if you are only thinking of going out and buying one, then do so! You'll not regret it.

Thanks lads.

I only got into this because of my son who wanted to learn to shoot! Now it's costing me a blooming fortune.

So I'm trying to persuade him to get the Ultra as his weapon (but I might be tempted to get one anyway :D)

Here's another question - can I air fill a spare canister and carry that around instead of looking like Jacques Cousteau lost in the woods?

No, sorry. It's a permanent fixture. :(

But you can get John Bowkett to fit an extended air reservoir.

But of course that's more money.

But money well spent IMHO :D

Further update....

After setting up the scope an evening on the bunnies was VERY productive! 27 of the darn things in a 2.5 hrs session. I'm using AA field and it seems to love them. It's a proper hunting tool, my number one choice for bunny bashing!

John

They have got a multishot Ultra in the Chichester Armoury if you want to have a look at one in the flesh(well they did last saturday when I was bored whilst waiting for my daughter)

great little guns:D:D:D

mine adores AA fields in 5.51 too....develops 11.2fpe with em (11fps variance over 35 shots), sounds like its out of air permently(its that quiet:cool:) , tis the best gun ive ever shot standing, great balance, light and the trigger is like glass breaking and its sufficiently different to most other PCPs to stand out.....detailing is exquisite and its a Beeza........

guess im rather smitten with it....

Thanks for that Richard.

I'm not currently interested in getting an Ultra. I'm looking for something that has either more capacity or an interchangeable air cylinder. (like the s200).

Or better still, a rifle that can shoot straight and some one to do it for me! Always said we'd miss the Empire when it was gone.

They go to a local butcher in exchange for other goodies;).

out of all the "budget" pcps, which has the greatest number of shots per fill?
thanks

I usually look at the Uttings web site (www.uttings.com). Each gun has an entry "Further Specifications and details click here" which gives an indication of the shots available in each calibre.

However this will vary with differing parameters.

The best advice given to me (on this site) is join a local club, if you'r not already in one (lots of people on here can help with that ;)), get to try out a number of PCPs at the club (members are very willing to let you have a shot! :D) make a decision as to which rilfe you really want then buy the best second hand PCP you can.

great piece of advice by Captpugwash, we had a gent come down last week to the club wanting advice/info (and a shoot) on some airguns for a piece of pest control, he had an idea but has had no real contact with airguns (apart from what he had read in the airgun mags) to see what he needed......

we all enjoy showing off our bits of kit:D, and it allowed him to make his mind up on what he wanted...... he had a go on a s410, my ultra, s200, tx200 and a brocock independent...... and it enabled him to try BEFORE you buy......

also another thing that you get in return is an unbiased appraisal on your own kit (we all get the need for more toys/gadgets and guns and i tend to lose sight on what ive got already) and some of that enthusiasm does rub off back on you too...... he ended up with a proper buying decision ( deffo PCP in .177, most likely a multishot) and also he was commenting on how much "gun" you get for your money even with the "cheaper" PCPs and that their performance is still pretty specialeven if the price tag is low......

looks like weve never had it soooooo good in airgunning for quality guns at honest prices;).....

just a little carry on, we now have a new member to our club, with a Ultra MS:D he reckons it perfect for what he needs it for, he just needs to get use to it and PCPs in particular.......
