View Full Version : Would you buy this book?

I'm currently helping a lady in our village to publish a recipe book, to raise money for Macmillan Nurses. Jenny lost her husband Geoff to cancer and this is her way of repaying the kindness and support he had during his last few months, and she still continues to receive.

The book will contain about 60 recipes, mainly traditional Devon fayre, plus some other items. Rick Stein, celebrity chef from Padstow has kindly donated a recipe.

It will be published towards the latter part of September and will sell for £5.

Can I ask, from the generous band of members on this board, how many of you would be prepared to commit to buy a copy, or maybe a couple of copies as Christmas presents.

This will help us decide on how many to print. Please send no money now, I'm just looking for your promise to spend a fiver on a copy. (Plus postage unfortunately).

Thanks in advance

Rich

I'll have one too, just PM me when its ready to be paid for.

A suggestion, have you thought of contacting the famous chefs, rhodes, ramsey etc and see if they would donate a recipe that will fit in with the other contents of the book? I'm sure if they knew the cause the money was going to not only would they buy a copy or two but they would gladly donate a recipe, seeing as Mr Stien has already ;) This could maybe lead to TV, Radio mentions for the book too ;)

Another suggestion, get a website going selling the book with piccies of all the celebs which have donated ;) everyone gets a bit of free promotion and are seen to be doing there bit (celebs love to be seen anywhere)

anyway, hope it all goes well :)

BTW
The fee for my consultation and advice is £50.00, please donate to the book funds :D

Well hello everyone.

I'm pleased to report that the recipe books have now been printed, and I took delivery of a huge pile of boxes each containing 40 or more books this afternoon.

Having been through the exercise of calculating how much it will cost to post, we are looking at £7 a book packed and posted, regardless of how many copies you have asked for. It doesn't help that one book is a large letter but 2 books becomes a packet, according to Royal Mail.:(

So, everyone who kindly said they would have a book, or more than one book, please make out a cheque in the relevant amount, made payable to SHEBBEAR CARES AND SHARES, send it to the address below with a note including your name and address and also your member name on this forum.

Sorry we can't at the moment take Paypal, this is a charity project and for reasons of transparency I would rather not have any money passing through privately held accounts. If you want to send cash I suggest you send it recorded or by RMSD, or send postal orders.

The address:

Shebbear Cares and Shares
Old Barn Cottage
Shebbear
Devon
EX21 5SG

Thank you all very much for your support with the project. The books will start to go out by post as soon as the money rolls in.

Hello Rabbit22

Yes it will be on the way to you today

We ran out of mailing cartons and I had to get some more in yesterday, which entailed a trip to Exeter as there weren't any nearer in stock.

So all those who've asked for a copy of the book and not yet sent your cheques in, please do so, I have a pile of cardboard and a stack of books in my office (well, dining room actually) that I want to shift as soon as possible.:D

Still a few folk who put their names down for a book haven't sent their cash yet.

This is an ideal present for that auntie or relative you don't often see. Order one now as an early Christmas gift for them. If you send us the £7 (incl P and P) and their address, we'll do all the rest for you, include a "gift from" tag with your name on it, parcel it up, send it off in time for Christmas and keep a proof of posting slip for you. :) Overseas post on request.

Thanks to all those who've bought a copy, we've had some lovely comments back and it's gratifying to know you are well pleased with it.

If you ask Mr Snock nicely he may allow you to use his Paypal account and then he can send me a cheque. However we still have the problem of the postal strike which will inhibit me sending out books just as much as it interferes with you sending cheques.

By all means send me by PM or email your postal details and I'll do my best to get them away from here on Monday.

For those still to write their cheques out, the postal service is just about back to normal now, so please let us have your cheques and your address details.

For those who've already received their books, and it seems you've all been delighted with them, the best thing you can do now for this good cause is to show the book to your next door neighbour and encourage them to buy one too.

And remember, we are offering a gift service. Just send us the money and the name and address of the recipient and we'll do all the rest for you, parcel up the book, post it first class, and get proof of posting for you. What an easy way to manage your Christmas present list..........

A brief note of thanks to I.J. and Raygun, who took a book to the Daystate open evening this week at Rivington Riflemen and raffled it. Ray, your cheque for £35 arrived today, many thanks.

Jenny Morritt, whose idea it was some months ago to publish this book, lost her husband Geoff some years back. Jenny and Geoff both came from Lancashire, and Geoff used to windsurf on Rivington Water, not far from the Rivi rifle club, hence the connection.

Hello Sammie

Your book is on the way, it was at our village PO (still open for another month or so!) at 10.33am.

Rich

PS I wonder what you'll try first, salmon and prawn filo parcels as a starter, followed by chicken with lime, and oaty apricot date and ginger crumble for pudding.

Or for the veggies and weight watchers, spinach and lemon soup, asparagus and tomato bake, with apple spiced muffins to finish.

Dribble dribble...................:D

The cookery book is for him. Let's see if he can cook anything without burning it. Somehow, I think not!:D

Reiverman thanks for the cheque arrived yesterday.

Your two books are on their way today in separate packets. Can you believe it's cheaper to post two singles than one double?

[QUOTE=Rich;2041721]I'm currently helping a lady in our village to publish a recipe book, to raise money for Macmillan Nurses.

Rich[/QUOTE

Would like one Please,

Now I am fully retired I like to cook, enable me to send a cheque for correct amount inc postage,

Look Forward to it, Bernard.

Sorry if I missed the enquiries before Christmas...........:(

Yes I still have a box left, about 30 books in all.

The Post Office are putting up the rates from April 2009, but as of now, orders for books posted are being taken at £7 per book. I'd like to be able to do multiple books at a cheaper rate but the PO tariff doesn't allow.

Please send a cheque or PO made out to

SHEBBEAR CARES AND SHARES

to this address:
Old Barn Cottage
Shebbear
Devon
EX21 5SG

Orders usually go out the same day the money is received; we don't wait for cheques to clear, as anyone who wants to cheat Macmillan Nurses will get their come-uppance some time. :)

Fine job Terry. We have a few left, not many. By all means get back to me when you have the readies.

It's a long way from Holt to Variety Sports, haven't you got any dealers nearer than that?? :)

If you do come again then make an appointment for a shoot with us. We are an hour south of Ilfracombe.

Terry, nice to hear from you.

They are £5 each plus £2 p and p and since the rates changed it's no cheaper to send two together than two separately so I'm afraid it's £14 altogether.

Send a PO or cheque made out to Shebbear Cares and Shares.

Post to

Old Barn Cottage

I'll get them ready

They took long enough to arrive, Terry. The certificate of posting says 10.08 on March 2nd and first class post.

If you like sea food, go for the Rick Stein special on page 24 for a starter, the chicken with lime on page 34 is a favourite, and Lorna's oaty apricot crumble with ginger and dates on page 74 will make sure you are not hungry. :)
