What sort of info are you after? John Forsey was the place around here to get big wildfowling guns, but havent been there for a while
http://www.johnforsey.co.uk
Theres bound to be a proper wildfowler or two around here, unfortunately I only shoot inland. BASC also have lots of fowling info as they were originally the Wildfowlers Association of Great Britain and Island (WAGBI), and own at leat one punt and gun setup.

Try the Wildowling forum, ezboard.com/bduckandgoosehunting , as you can imagine there is quite a bit of info on there, also you could try the BASC
There are still some hard cases who practice the sport out there!

Best source I know of for info on punt guns (stanchions) is Peter Hawker's book, Instructions to Young Sportsmen.
He designed his own double barrelled punt gun which was built by various makers including Durs Egg, Joe Manton and Westley Richards. Not a lot he didn't know about wildfowling :D

I used to out with an old local on the River Ouse, when I was a lad. He was a real character. He had, what I remember to be, a 4bore mounted on the front of his punt [I use the word punt loosely].:)

Building one would be an interesting exercise, you would need access to a big lathe, at least colchester mascot in size. My Bantam is not big enough!
It would be easier to build a muzzleloader as less complex. However its done the design and workmanship has to be beyond reproach and it should be proofed.
In the old days locomotive steam pipe was often used for barrels with reinforcing sections shrunk on at the breech end.
At least one gun was built from a surplus bofors gun barrel and must have been a mighty piece, i heard it was lost in the solway along with its gunner but i cant remember the details
mr who?

In the havant museum in hampshire , i seem to recall that in the firearm section there was a fairly sizeable part of it devoted to punts etc...
However , it has been a while since ive been down there so am unsure if they could be any help at all .

I dont use them as such, a local fowler asked me if I would make him one so I thought it would be just as easy to make a pair. the chap operates in the wash area.
If I ever get the hang of this site I'll put some pictures on for you if you are interested. Cheers for now.

I seem to recall The Field did an article quite a few years ago about someone who built his own punt gun - a breech loader which from memory used old anti-aircraft shells as cartridges!! Might be worth checking out their archive.

There are several long threads on punt guns on the Wildfowling forum.
I have often thought that a long 30mm cannon barrel, something like a hughes chain gun barrel might make an excellent punt gun, sadly i think it is likely that mr plod would frown upon it!

A punt gun will class as a shotgun up to the max calibre allowed of 1 3/4" as long as it has a barrel of min 24" in length. Obviously you can hardly put one in your gun cabinet so it would probably be aceptable to chain it up in your garage. Problem with reaming out and using an ex military barrel is that the police "rule" once a firearm always a firearm is likely to be enforced and in the case of a cannon barrel these would be section 5.

There is an excellent Punt Gun section in the Royal Armories Museum in Leeds, with several examples and a very good life size display to show how it was done. Incidentally a lot of Punt Gunners killed themselves when the breech of their gun exploded right next to their face.

I know this is an oldish post, but I seem to remember there's a guy in Dumfries who makes punt guns. Unfortunately this is all I know. Maybe you could contact gunshops, wildfowling clubs in that area of Scotland. Or possibly the BASC knows about him.

Hey up Jim,
You're correct according to the HO guidance to the Police 2002, Chapter 2 section 4 a diameter of 2" is the permitted maximum.
"a) has a barrel not less than 24 inches in
length and does not have any barrel with
a bore exceeding 2 inches in diameter.
In law, the length of the barrel is measured
from the muzzle to the point of ignition
(breech face). For a muzzle-loading gun,
the point of ignition may be taken as the
touch-hole or nipple that is nearest to
the breach;"
Hope this helps
