The price of 17 HMR ammunition looks like escalating towards the £30 a pop and ever closer to the cost of reloading the 17 Rem.

Do you think it would be practical, or have you ever down loaded the 17 Rem to say about 2800/3000 ft/sec with a 20g head or even smaller, or do you think the idea is just not on.

A few brief points............

The 17 Rem has a sizeable case to be using with a 1/2 load of powder which puts you at risk of flashover and detonation so you might end up having to load 1/2 the case with an inert substance like the Blackpowder shooters sometimes do?

I dont know if you have seen them but Remington now has a cartridge they call the.17 Remington fireball. Basically a commercial loading of the .17Mach 4:

I have no experience of this but you might get on with this better, downloaded using a bulky pistol powder?

Have you considered that you might be better off with something like a .17 Hornet:

As an alternative have you tried a .17HM2? at about 2050fps and ammo at 1/2 there price of .17HMR they are a serious contender for an alternative to that type of round?

Putting all of those aside I find it hard to beleive that anyone thinks they can get away with £30 for .17HMR, it got to the point where it was at £24 and came down to £15 which was still about double the US price at the time.

We were in Texas las month and .17hmr was to be had for about$12-13 a box if you double that up it wouls still only make it £24-26 per 100 here in the UK?

The last .17HM2 ammo I got came from Norman Clark at £15.98 per 100 (£7.49 a box.

That seriously hacked me off as in the USA it was $3.99 a box (or £2) at around the same time!

IF enought people DONT feed their HMR's fpr a while then the price will drop!

I understand what you are saying about other calibres and the flash over, but that would mean I have to change guns. Having both a 17 HMR and a 17 Rem I just thought I would see if there is any mileage in downloading.

As for people not shooting their 17 HMR, looking at some of the posts I think they would sooner go hungry.

I have thought about a variation to sell the HMR and get a .17Rem.
As i reload for my 22-250 it would probably work out cheaper ammo wise if the prices continue to rise at the rate they are now!!

Plus the .17Rem has a lot more range than a HMR.

Looks like a win/win situation to me
