View Full Version : Varget Powder and Load data
I've used Quickload, Load from a disk and much literature published for reloading.
Not all, but most Varget data seems to be well over the safe limits of some loads.
For Instance 42 grains of Varget under a 70 grain BT. I got nowhere over 41.2 before primers were popping. That was regardless of brass type or primer or OAL.
Quickload shows this as well within limits too. .17 data in Quickload is also showing well within limits when I am picking parts of my bolt off the floor.
Seems odd and the only problem I have had is with Varget.....

Remember that is a MAX load and something youre supposed to work up to, stopping when you get signs etc
I guess all data accurate in the test rig listed in the book
The only time I ever went straight in at a max weight was with my .243AI using .243win data

I agree, but it is the only powder that I get pressure signs on my way up to max. Most other powder's I can get to max or over, but Varget starts to show signs way before the stated max.
Quickload gives me pretty accurate results with most powder/bullet combinations, but when working up, the Varget never gets close to what the books or QL suggests.

Well i'm fairly new to reloading 243, blue, but have been using Varget exclusively, and can see your point mate
I've stopped both my 80gr loads at 38.1gr (that's Nosler Custom brass, Fed 210s, Varget and either Berger Match or Nosler BT Varmints) as at 38.3+ the primers were getting well flattened and the recoil snappy and the cases stretched and the bases belting.....
One thing i did notice was that between a min of 36.5 and a max of 38.5...there's ONLY 175fps difference....and they are SO SILKY SMOOTH (with my HS precision stock and R3 pad) at around 37.5-38.0 that i saw no point in flogging the arse out of it, especially as i'm getting into the threes with these loads :D :D
However, the 105gr Amaxes (which i haven't quite finished developing yet) def need max loads of varget to get them into a half inch, but don't show nearly the pressure signs that the 80s do near the max....(varget isn't best powder for heavy stuff but seems to be doing ok, if a few hundred fps down)
FYI gun is R700, 8 Fluted match barrel, tuned trigger, and HS precision stock, off versapod 52 bipod. And i love 243 - so mild to shoot and yet so versatile, fast and accurate! :)
