Following this thread... http://www.airgunbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=280329
I have decided that I will make one of these free websites which will have a list on of what works well in different guns. This should save people time and money because they should be able to atleast narrow the possible pellets down before even buying a tin!
I realise that even diferent guns of the same model can prefer different pellets but this should go atleast some way to heling people!
But, I only have one air rifle and So I need your help, please reply to this thread with the make, model and caliber of your rifle/pistol and what pellets or pellets it likes.
Thanks,
Toby

Cometa Fenix 400 .22

Also tried: David Nickerson and Napiers, again had quite a few of the Napiers with excess material on the skirts and both brands had a number that were very tight when loading. Also noticed with both brands that some of the pellets that were tight got the skirt crushed when the gun was closed which is not a good start.
Hope the above is useful.

Hi - after much plinking...
AA S410K, UK spec 177 - AA Field (4.51), Logun Penetrators and Predator Polymags all give good, consistent groups. Polymags and RWS Supermags knock rabbits flatter than a rabbitskin rug!
Superten 177, UK spec - Logun Penetrators into ragged one-holers.
BSA Lightning XL 177 - AA Field (4.50)
Webley Raider 22 - AA Field (5.51) and Weihrauch F&T Specials, 10mm groups.
(all 5-shot strings)
Dunno about the Superten in 22, or the Sirocco - the Superten's in bits while the Reg gets a service and I've only had the Sirocco about 6 hours. :D

Sorry to piss on your chips but what one person thinks is acceptable performance is another person's 'shotgun grouping'.
You need ranges and group size to make this meaningful.
If you do that though it will be very useful!;)

Lighten up Weevie. Where does it say 'ballistically sound scientific proof must be provided'.
It is only meant as a rough guide and might help ease the old "what pellet for this gun" question that comes up 5 times a week to which there is only one answer.

I realise that some people dont think that this is a great idea but the idea is for people to be able to see what works best in ther gun, if people put down size of groups then much of the size of the group will be as a result of the shooters ability. Those of you who are very experienced will be getting muh tighter groups than people who have not been shooting long. Therefore if people put what groups best then that goes somewaay to eliminate the problem of shooters ability.
I have now finnished my GCSE's so I have more free time and if there are still people out there who think this is a good ide then please add to the list and I will keep adding them to the website.

Mate it's a nice idea and I didn't mean to rubbish the idea. It's just that if someone thinks Milbro Caledonians group well then all that tells us is that they don't know what grouping well is and it could lead to some poor bugger going out and buying some!:D
The thing about fidning the best pellet is that it has to be done from a bench or in some way supported so as to take as much of the a shooter out of the equation.
That given, providing group sizes is helpful and gives some frame of reference.

Obviosly I realise that this is not a way to know the exact brand that WILL work best it is just to narrow down the choice a little, hopefully it will save acouple of people time and money.

My .177" Mk3 TX200 HC has no problems with Crosman Premiers.
I know I'm far from the world's greatest shot (barely had the rifle 5 weeks), but I still pulled off a group that was 1/2" (by a hair) at 20 yards (outdoors) using them from prone - took me a while though, there must have been whole minutes between some shots.

So-So: Wadcutters, unless the barrel screw is loose.
As a thought, sometimes it's as important to know which ones *don't* work so well with a particular model.
I wonder if there's a pellet and airgun wiki?
David.

AA S410 .177:
Top choice - Webley Mosquito Express 4.52.
Close second - JSB Exact 4.52, AA Field 4.52, Daystate FT 4.52 (and probably any other 8.4 grain JSB equivalents in 4.52).
Worth considering - Bisley Long Range Gold, Acuples, Crossman Premier and Defiants
AA TX 200HC .177:
Top choice - AA Field 4.52 (and probably any other 8.4 grain JSB equivalents in 4.52)
Close second - Webley Mosquito Express 4.52
HW 97K .177:
As gun is very new to me I have only tested AA Field 4.52 which work very well – interested to see what else is recommended for this rifle.
BTAS FX Cyclone .22 FAC
Top choice: AA Field 5.52, FX Premier 5.52 (and probably any other 16 grain JSB clones in 5.52.)
Not recommended: As the gun is very pellet fussy I would just stick to the above.

This is the same idea that I had for Targets and it resulted in www.targetbunny.btik.com :D
When you are ready PM me the site and I will drop a link on mine.:)
If you want to know how I did it I will be happy to pass on the info and experience I had getting this up and running. I have a couple of articles regarding pellets and will be glad to send them to you for your site instead of mine since you are intending to tackle the subject. For example the power calculator on the homepage of targetbunny. I would put it up here but the file size is too big for the BB:eek:

HW100K (177): Best pellet - JSB Exact Heavy (one hole groups @ 25m).
Also tested: JSB Exact 4.52 - same as the Heavies in still conditions but more affected by cross winds.
Air Arms 410 Classic (177): Results as per HW100K
Air Arms Prosport (177): Best pellet JSB Exact / AAF 4.52 (cloverleafs @ 25m in still conditions)
HW98 (177): Results as per Prosport
Air Arms TX200 (22): Best pellet - Accupell (cloverleafs @ 25m). Slightly down on power vs AAF.
Also tested: AAF 5.52 - good groups but Accy's still have the edge. H&N FTT - similar groups to the AAF but way down on power. Superdomes - good power, crap groups.
Conclusion: Try the JSB variants first - they are likely to be as good as anything in most rifles.

MKII S200, .22 cal, new Daystate Carbon Fibre Airstream silencer, best pellet (I tried AA Fields, JSB's, H&N's FTT's and Webley Mosquitoes) are by far the mosquitoes.
The H&N's were shotgunning.
The AA Fields were super accurate but VERY loopy due to their weight (15.9 grains) and needed massive holdunder/over at ranges other than zero and did 11.4ft/ibs approx at 560fps.
The Mosquitoes were again as accurate as the AA Fields (they were both pellet on pellet at 30 yards) but were leaving the muzzle at 600 fps consistently, again, giving 11.4ft/ibs approx. They flew much flatter than the AA Fields and needed much less holdover at longer ranges due to their lighter weight (14/3 grains) but still have ample stopping power.
I know they are expensive (£6-50 for 250 in .22) but I don't shoot targets, only hunt and a tin last a good couple of months at least.
Basically, AIR ARMS S200 sub 12ft/ibs - WEBLEY MOSQUITOES ARE THE PELLET TO TRY

850 Airmagnum CO2 - .22
Crossman 88g cylinder. The results were recorded after I'd taken 100 shots.
D Nickerson Mag - 12.6gr - 8.82 ft/lbs, 561fps - Terrible quality.
Milbro Caled - 13.3gr - 11.1 ft/lbs, 612fps - inconsistent quality, but fast.
Accupel - 14.3gr - 10.4 ft/lbs, 573fps - OK, consistent but tight fit.
RWS S.dome - 14.5gr - 10.6 ft/lbs, 575fps - OK, consistent.
H&N FTT - 15.1gr - 11.2 ft/lbs, 577fps - Good.
RWS S.Field - 15.9gr - 11.4 ft/lbs, 568fps. Very good.
Bisley Premier - 17gr - 10.9 ft/lbs, 536fps. OK under 20yds,
The RWS Superfield at 15.9gr seems to suit my rifle between 10 - 25yds. Single hole groups. Drops about 5 inches at 40yds, but still carries a lot of energy.
Penetration - Target 1" thick chipboard , 20 yards
Accupel - minimal pellet distortion, penetrated to the pellet length
Bisley Premier - came back to me. 3mm deep dent in the target, pellet half flat.
RWS S.F. - flat pellet buried to about 2-3 mm (3 further shots punched a hole)
I'm still testing :)

just bought some rws superdomes for aa410 .22 allways used aafield or hunters ,got the rws because they were 3quid cheaper ,25 yards every pellet through 1st pellet hole:eek::eek::eek: wish i bought them sooner:rolleyes:
I have a HW100S, It seems to go well with RWS Hobby Sport line, and RWS Superdomes,...
I have just purchased a selection of .177 'testers' from Pellpax,... and will publish results after trials, however,... HELP!!!
There is a packet of 'H&N copper point, 7.5 Gramme' in there, will they be OK in my barrel??? newbie here, not too sure if I can use them without risk to barrel??
Thanks guys, Fred

OK Guys, test completed.....(but didnt try the copper point ones,...Chicken!!)
Results,.... Shooting at 30 yards,... The following all had touching/cloverleaf type patterns with 4 shots:-.......
Webley Mosquito, H&N Silhouette,Bisley long range Gold, Bisley Magnum, Barracuda Match Heavy,& RWS superdomes,....
Second was H&N Field & Target Trophy, (Ragged hole, 8mm x 5mm,)
And my winner was????? Air Arms Field, (4.52), single hole group!!! & I cant shoot that good!!!!
To check, I bought a full tin, and after 'tweaking' the sights,... I can't tell you how good I feel with this combo!!! I hit the centre of six five pence pieces at this range,.... and shot 50 pellets at targets,... every pellet went where the crosshairs were,... any 'flyers/stragglers' were down to me,.....
HTH Guys,.. Fred

My new S400 Carbine likes AA Field 4.51 which is strange as S400's in .177 usually like 4.52's. Not that I've tried 4.52 yet. But 14 shots at 25 yards in a group slightly smaller than a 5p shot with 4.51's is hard to argue with.
Just bought a tin of these to try out in my BSA Spitfire (apparently same barrel as many othe BSA rifles). 1) They are very hard to push flush into the barrel 2) In the sun through the scope at 9x I could see the pellet "corkscrewing" towards the target - which incidentally it did not hit. The hollow point seems to make these unstable in flight - for my gun at least. They're not even useful for plinking - I'll throw them away.

The pellet comes out a rifled barrel spinning at something like 35-40,000 rpm so it will still be spinning long after the pellet hits the target or the ground :)

My best groupings (I count an excellent grouping as a ragged hole at 40 yards for PCP and 25-30 yards for springer)
HW100K .177
Best: Weihrauch Magnums @ 10.2 grains (no idea head size)
Good: Weihrauch Select @ 8.4 grains (no idea head size)
HW95 .22
Best: H&N FTT @ 5.52
Very Good: AA Field @ 5.52
Rapid Mk2 FAC (32ft/lbs) .22
Best: Bisley Magnums (no idea head size)
Very Good: Weihrauch Magnums (no idea head size)
Truly, Terribly Awful: AA Field @ 5.52
In the same vein as the above, I've got:
HW100K .177
Best: JSB Exact Heavy (4.52)
Very Good: JSB Exact 8.4 grains (4.52)
TX200 Mk3 .22
Best: Accupell
Very Good: Air Arms Field (5.52)
Truly, Terribly Awful: RWS Superdome
HW97K .22
Best: Air Arms Field (5.52)
Very Good: Superdome / H&N FTT
Truly, Terribly Awful: Accupell
(PS, Apologies for nicking your format, but I thought it was a good'un! :))

Recent HW80K after many years break from shooting and it seems very fussy with poi changing from over 1.5" at 30yds at not always in elevation! RWS superfields are an inch the the right of HN FTT?
Sadly the best pellets I have are an old tin of Wasps before the change!

@ DJP: no problem, good that it is useful!
I have a theory that with my Theoben barrel, the bore is slightly larger than that of say Air Arms or BSA.
Anyone know the head size of Bisley Magnums?

Dont know the head size but they are not tight in the barrel of any gun Ive owned, my HW80 does not seem to keen on them, you really need full power for bis mags in 22 but they seem better in 177

Hello all.
I am a retired man who loves his shooting - of all sorts - benchrest, 1000yd, hunting, clays and again at last air gunning. Airguns had to be licenced in South Africa until recently, and as the number of firearm licences were limited, many, including myself rather went for their most needed firearms.
I travel a lot and am in the UK frequently. So I bought myself a Daystate AirWolf MVT FAC in .177 cal. I mounted a MTC Viper 4 to 16x50 scope on it, and it is great.
I have had a lot of fun trying different pellets and being amazed at how much the wind moves the pellet, even at 25yds.
As it is illegal to fire any firearm (includes airguns) in an urban area, its not quite as easy as shooting in the UK.
I will add a few pellets to the list as I get them.
All shot at 25yds 5 shots to stabilise fps - then 5 shots for group
all shots from 10 shot magazine
H&N Diabolo Baracuda extra heavy .177cal (4.5x) 10.5grns 850fps (16.9ftlb) groups sub 2mm consistent - as small as .2mm
Daystate .177H .177cal (4.52) 10.25grns 650fps (9.6ftlb) groups avg 5mm
Daystate .177H .177cal (4.52) 10.25grns 720fps (11.8ftlb) avg 4mm
Air Arms AA Field .177cal (4.5x) 8.4grns 800fps (11.94ftlb) groups avg 5mm
Crosman Accupel .177cal (4.5x) 7.9grns 825fps (11.94ftlb) groups avg sub 4mm
Crosman Accupel .177cal (4.5x) 7.9grns 900fps (14.21ftlb) groups avg 6mm (always 1 flyer taking a 3mm grp out to 6mm)
That's about it for now. Sorry about the long post.
Go well
Bruce
Hello again - 2 more pellets
All shot at 25yds 5 shots to stabilise fps - then 5 shots for group
all shots from 10 shot magazine
Crosman Premier Heavy .177cal (4.50) 10.5grns 850fps (16.85ftlb) groups avg 1.5mm
Daystate Rangemaster HE.177ca (4.50) 8.5grns 850fps (13.64ftlb) groups avg 2mm
Go well

hi all as the title suggests iam new to this very fine forum but not to other forums and definatly not new to the world of airgunning but did take a long break when my days were spent raising a family and fly fishing.
anyhow didnt see a section on here for introductions so hello all, love an old pellet discussion so was drawn to this thread for my first post.
iam currently only using a modded old crosman 760 dating back to the sixties a real nice version of it all metal parts not the cheap plastic crap you get today. and i find that with this RWS hobby and gamo pro match flathead pellets work superbly and also double up as effective close range pest control pellets.
cheers all, james.

Daystate x2 r sports .22 [B] likes Airs Arms Field, will comfortably group under an inch at 30m------Dislikes Accupels as they jammed:eek:
[B]BSA Lightning .22liked Accupels then went onto Air Arms field still good groups.(only because i was being tight using same pellets):p
As of yesterday it regrouped using Accupels, from sitting at 25m 1" although i did spot its trajectory looping off left and back in.
I plum for a tin of RWS Superdomes anyone wanna argue??
