View Full Version : S16 Evo. First impressions

Well I've had mine for approx 4 hours now, so I thought I'd share my first impressions with you.
Provided time and usage prove reliability, I think they have cracked it this time.
Still has the same S16 business like looks, but pleasingly and subtley different. The new slightly angled bottle is much better than the old, and my only complaint, and it applied to the previous model as well, is why oh why when they were evolving it didn't they evolve a better bottlecover/cheekpiece! The present one I can tolerate, but I've only ever met one person who told me they actually liked it. Still by the looks of it, the bottle and cover/cheek piece on the fX Verminatior look the same, so I will investigate if the covers are available to purchace on their own and retro fit if possible.
Cocking and loading is smooth and easy. The more traditional bolt action a vast improvement on the old slide and latch. No more ' did I push it forward hard enough to ensure I locked it' in the heat of a rat shoot. With the new bolt it's locked or it isn't, no question marks.
Feels good to handle and comes up to the shoulder nice. The new pistol grip is also has a much better feel in the hand. Very quite, as is to be expected from the QGS silencer.
Have scoped it up and fitted the laser. Zeroed it for starters in the back garden at 20 yards till I can get to the range. Groups are one hole clovers, and I fully expect that to reduce to almost pellet on pellet at this range, once I get the trigger adjusted to my liking (the factory set is far to heavy for me) So this bodes well for longer ranges.
I'm also going to invest in the optional side rails for fitting my Stinger gunlight, rather than having it mounted on the scope, since it should be more compact like that. Also comes with a very nice take down carry case.
On the whole very pleased for now. I will report further on any plus or minus points as they arise. Thanks to Pete at The Air Gun Centre Rayleigh for putting it aside for me.

Hi
Nice review, I'm seriously thinking of getting one.

I ordered a bottle cover / cheek piece for an FX off of Ben Taylor & Sons when I got my S16s and it fitted perfectly .... made all the difference as I also couldn't see why Logun had not done something similar when they introduced the S16s.
I'm amazed that once again they've neglected to do what is an easy mod and would make the EVO bang up to date.

Good review! I like the look of the Evo.

I got a new buttpad from a gunshop in Sweden for my MK1 which FX put me in touch with.

Makes a world of difference to cheek weld.

Sadly I can't remember which shop it was.

An email to FX would soon sort it though.

I had previously contacted BTAS and was told they couldn't supply me with one.

Thanks people. I will certainly sort myself out an FX bottle cover now.
In answer to the FAC query, mine is 12ftlbs. I assume this will be the norm, with FAC to special order.
They are currently only available in 22, with 177 to follow soon (seem to recall that was the roll out with the previous model) so you 177 fans will have to wait a little longer in afraid.

Cheers again.

Was visiting Rayleigh two day ago and spotted what must now be your S16. Very tactical indeed, you'll enjoy yourself discussing it with the traditionalists. I'd quite like one, but doubt I'll have the money, how much are they BTW?.

£599 is the RRP. You might get it cheaper if you shop about. I was fortunate to have the old model to trade in which took the sting out of it a bit!
Hope to get out with it later in the week and will report back again once I have given it a proper workout.

Do you know if the new pistol grip is compatible with M16 pistol grips? If so, then there something else to try for comfort as well. There are a lot of M16 grips out there, including an ergonomic grip.

Oh Bedlam! Ye of little faith. To quote Oddball in the film 'Kelly's Heros' "Always wid da negative vibes man!" Believe me if it does break you guys will be the first to know (after the shop I got it from that is) I didn't manage to break my S mind you.
As for accuracy Ryan, I'm sure it's able to outshoot me most of the time. Did 4 shot group at 40 yards the other day and save 1 shot that I pulled 3 went through the same hole near as dam it. Using Bisley LRGs at the moment as they went well in my previous S. Will try other brands idc.
No idea about the grip Mojo but something to think about/look into.
Watch this space.

Regards
Phil

How can you possibly review a rifle after owning it for 4 hours, and shooting it over 20 yards? Give us a break..!

Don't forget, you may have previously read about the Evo, but others haven't.

So assuming you knew nothing beforehand, you now know:

:: The air bottle is angled, not straight

:: It has the same bottlecover/cheekpiece as before

:: The cocking system has changed to a more traditional bolt action

:: It's a vast improvement on the old slide and latch, and is either cocked and locked or it isn't.

:: It has a new shape pistol grip

:: The trigger is adjustable and the factory setting is quite heavy

:: Optional side rails are available

:: It comes with its own take-down carry case.

But it's a bad review, right?

I'd rather be told all that than learn nothing.

I think the clue is in the title words "First Impressions".

I agree. You can't fully review a rifle having owned it for 4 hours and only shot it over 20 yards, but that wasn't the point.
As I said these where only my first impressions on how it was put together, how it handled and it's theoretical potential based on the limited use so far. As I said I would report back once I had had a chance to use it a bit more. This is still ongoing.
I felt it better to give it some serious use first, so I could let people know if there had been any gremlins. Ok maybe I did ask for it in my first line, but I tell it how it is. No point in making it up!

No hard feelings.

I would not bother, the gremlins here will mostly slate what you post.
Thats why there is little in this section, even though you try to offer something to forward the sport it does not matter to them.
First Impressions - perhaps these words are too large for them to read or understand.

But thanks for the info,I took it for what it was.

Nothing personal against 50bmg, but why not put "first impressions" in the General Airgun section? A review should take at least a couple of weeks of dedicated testing with different pellets at ranges out to at least 55 yards. I would like to see tightness of groups, consistency over the chrono, power curves and sweet spots etc.

A pretty poor excuse for not reading the words "First Impressions" in the title (and that's pretty obviously what happened). Who said it had to be a definitive, comprehensive take first off? I thoroughly look forward to his next installment after this great teaser.

Just remembered where my bottle cover came from.

FX put me in touch with a Swedish gun shop called ProGunner.

The guy I dealt with was Rickard Hillman

info@progunner.se

Nice, but not cheap.

Price including p&p £50

BUT the guy only takes bank transfers, which apart from being a real pain costs an extra £20!!

Was it worth it?

Ah, but Nick, the S-16 was my first true love. :)

Then I got everything I could out of her (loads of shots), tried her in all sorts of positions (sitting, kneeling, prone etc) and then dumped her. ;)

Sold on here a long time ago.

I would like to use my evo w/o the silencer, like i did the s16s.....but the end cap on silencer does not fit onto the remaining fluted shroud as on the s16s....also the thread where silencer fits onto end of barrel seems different to thread where fluted shroud screws onto rest of gun,,,sooooo if you unscrew silencer, and then fluted shroud no problem, but if you try and unscrew fluted shroud w/o first unscrewing silencer i think you could do some serious thread stripping...another thing i noticed from s16s is that scope rail seems much higher, putting scope higher, even with lowest mounts i could find, i need a higher cheek piece,,,,,but really i think i will have a new lower scope rail made up.

mark1
15-03-2009, 08:45 PM
esier said than done mate the scope rail conceals the mag indexer rod so there is a bit more to it than meets the eye:cool:mind you everything is possible :D

Hi, just so I get this right - you can't swivel the rubber butt cover around the buddy bottle, yes?

If so, try gently warming the whole thing in some warm water and trickle washing-up liquid down the side of the cover (off the rifle of course :D).

When it comes off, rinse all the washing-up off as it contains salt.

This process won't hurt it, but don't leave the washing-up liquid on for extended periods.
