this will be an ongoing review as i get to grips with the rifle
firstly this gun has had some pretty bad press as far as i am aware there are two major things to check before doing any thing drastic like returning the rifle
1 check the trigger is not to far back on the forward backward adjustment slide as was the case with mine if the trigger contacts the rear guard when pullled it will not index the magazine and will have to be moved forward this can cause either no loading of next pellet which is bad but even worse it can make the bolt feel stiff on loading the problem then is flyers ! these can be extreme some 3 to 4 inches off target and have caused some owners to suspect barrell problems.
2 if you make a trigger adjustment weight or travel this sometimes causes the same problem as in situation 1 but with a different cure, this will require the index screw to be adjusted this is detailed in the dvd but john bowkett has a slightly different method which i used
remove the stock and the index adjuster is the one nearest the front being an allen screw secured by a 7mm nut.
unlock the nut and screw the allen screw so it is flush with threaded block insert a tensioned BUT UNLOADED magazine into rifle and cock the bolt holding it right back even the last 2mm of pull needed to index the magazine in normal use then whilst holding bolt right back unscrew the allen screw slowly anti clockwise until you hear the magazine click round then unscrew allen screw a further 1/8 of a turn anti clockwise lock the 7mm nut up and you are good to go.
these checks will probably address 90% of any problems
i will be doing some extensive pellet testing shortly and will add pictures and a ful review of the rifle

i will make a start on the review and hopefully be allowed to add pictures later,
out of the box she looks fine a very tasty piece of walnut which on the production model does not have the extra magazine holders as fitted to the prototype, it is a mid brown walnut with some good grain features has rose wood and maple caps on the fore end and under the palm swell area, palm swell has neat laser cut chequering as does the fore end grip area.
the stock is removed by a single 4 MM Allen key and the buddy bottle does not have to be removed to do this although the action has to be tipped up from the rear and moved forward to clear the bottle. replacement is a simple reversal of this.
the stock is fitted with a rubber butt pad which is adjustable for cheek fit so you can get your eye relief spot on, adjustment is via 3 flat head screws in the rear of pad, i will probably exchange these for Allen bolts in the near future.
when removed i was pleasantly surprised at the attention to detail of the relief work very neat and tidy unlike some gouge jobs i have seen on some production rifles.
there is a gauge on the underside for bottle pressure but be aware these are only a guide and you should read dive bottle or pump gauge when filling my particular gauge under reads by about 30 bar !. the fill point is situated right next to the gauge in between gauge and front of trigger guard, fill pressure is Bar giving about 150 shots in .177 and 180 in .22
i fill to 200 bar as i always fill less than manufacturer suggests although this is a regulated rifle so should not suffer from low power output due to near on or overfilling.the rifle can be filled by removing the bottle but why would you ? to remove bottle simply unscrew one complete turn and with magazine removed discharge 4 or 5 shots you will hear power drop off then unscrew and fill then replace hand tight and off you go again.
the stock is fitted with sling studs which is a nice touch for 2 reasons 1 is it saves you £10 for a set of studs and 2 you don't come over all sweaty when trying to drill that tasty walnut stock!.
the rifle it self is a 10 shot magazine feed unit which works flawlessly when set up correctly see ST page of thread, there is to be a single shot adaptor shortly which will be great for the hft circuit.
the barrel is BSA own brand unlike many on the market these have been in production for many years now and are very good quality being cold rolled in manufacture.
the barrel is shrouded and is pretty quite as stock although BSA have also kindly put a 1/2 unf thread on the end to fit any standard silencer this is capped off in standard mode. with the silencer fitted it is extremely quite.
end of butt pad to centre of trigger is inches and end of butt pad to end of barrel is 37 inches the rifle weighs in at 6.lbs and probably one of its best features is its balance i would swear it was 5 1/2 lbs it sits so sweet and is rock steady in standing stance.
i have fitted an Eb sniper which is a 10x44 scope with medium sports-match mounts this gives a 25 thou gap  between shroud and scope and measures 1 1/2 between centre of barrel and centre of scope which gives a nice flat trajectory.
safety catch is on left and is clearly marked f for fire and s for safety.
overall so far i think this is an excellent rifle and think that its features and stock would have demanded at least another £150 on the price tag of £650 and i have even heard of the rifle selling for £590 at some dealers, when you think you are getting a regulated rifle with a walnut stock 10 shot auto magazine and 150 shot count from one of the oldest and most respected gun manufactuers i think it is very good value and its is made in britain to boot !!.
more to follow range testing next

Well i bought one today. really looks nice and as said previously its so light and pointable. I intend to give it a good test tomorrow. Accordingly i thought i would get it ready. The factory trigger setting is pants tbh. OOps better read instructions before i do anything. Skipped most of it but read carefully the trigger adjustment section. BSA need to employ better proof readers. quote " Turning the screw clockwise reduces the second stage release; turning it clockwise increases the second stage release".

Decided to fit the trusty weirauch silencer before having to remove stock to adjust the trigger. Try as i might i couldnt remove end cap :( added some heat from the heat gun to the end cap and it came off with a bit of persuation. Lots of loctite on the threads. No wonder it wouldnt come off by hand.

Now to adjust the trigger, I removed the stock and opened the packet supplied with the allen keys in it. First thing i noticed was the threaded receiver where the stock screw goes into looked like it had been tightened with a pair of pliers :( lots of gouging and burrs and nice shiny metal instead of blueing. Then to cap it all one of the allen keys supplied is the wrong size for the second stage trigger pull weight.

Quick chrono test before i lose my temper. A consistent average of 550 fps with h&n ftt's = 9.94ft lbs.
I will give it some time to "run in" but so far i am not instilled with confidence.
Will keep you updated

davebelton - thanks for the review mate. I can second it being extremely quiet with a moderator on the front. I have a BSA VC moderator and the only noise is the hammer falling and the THWACK of a .22 H&N FTT pellet whacking into the target. Very tasty indeed.

Poisondwarf - Oh dear. Sounds like you might have a bit of a lemon mate. Mine is pushing H&N FTTs downrange at 10.59 ft lbs, and there was no loctite on the UNF thread for fitting a moderator.

Think I got the dreaded british "friday afternoon" gun. If it didnt say made in birmingham ENGLAND on the side i would be checking the map for a birmingham in china :(
Checked it before going to the range and its doing 300 fps with 200 bar in. It now resides in the shop i bought it from until they can talk to BSA on monday.

Got a call from shop this morning. "Come and collect your r10 replacement please" excellent service from them ( Marsh Tackle in High Wycombe) and BSA.
This one is sweet as a nut and i am very happy with it :)

glad you got it sorted nice and quick m8
went to Pete's farm today to do some range work
tested
daystate 4.53 daystate 4.52 air arms 4.52 jsb exact 4.52 jsb express and h&n ft and t's
all performed to good standard out to 35 yards the daystates giving a 5 pence tight group and the worst were probably the express but even those did not stray out of a ten pence size group.
moved target out to 50 yards and then saw some differences, the h&n tightened up and were joint top with the jsb exacts again 5 pence size group was the max with these two pellets,i had some very good groups around an inch size with the rest again some expanded slightly but still gave groups within an inch overall a very accurate rifle for he money.

That's a decent group at 50 yards with the H & N's.

Mine peformed best at this distance with the H & N's too, but the group was about a 1.25" spread. These were the best by far with most of the other pellets tried being absolutely awful.

There does seem to be the early signs of a pattern forming with the R-10's liking H & N's.

I find that H&N ftt's perform best in all my .177" barrels, the 22"s however all go best with Defiant large head.

How many of each did you shot? Could the differances be done to pressure drop? Mind you, this is a reg'ed rifle, so shouldn't make to much differance

hi i did 10 shot groups with each pellet and you are right there should be no pressure difference as its regged to be honest my r-10 went straight to john bowkett for a fettle as he has done all my bsa rifles i know it has a modded hammer spring and he did some of his magic to the barrell as far as i know all the bsa rifles group and shoot better with h&n pellets jb recommends them if you ever appear to have grouping problems try some h&n although i have to say the tin i bought had some pretty ropey skirts on them atb dave

Ive done a bit of pellet testing with my r10 including h&n ftt but have only tried 10 different makes so far. The pellet that has come out top so far in my r10 is Bisley magnums.

davebelton
08-06-2009, 01:15 PM
ahh forgot to mention that one according to john bowkett all bsa barrels shot the best with magnums but we all dont want to shot with such a heavy pellet all the time so i did not try these in r-10 test but had them in ultra and super tens i have owned
