Hi I had an E-Mail from a guy in the US asking me about my EV2 and why should he buy one over a second hand Pro-Target..heres what I wrote.........
........I got a bit carried away........
Hi Chuck.
Oh, where do I start ?
Before I brought my Ev2 in March 2005 I was dead set on getting a Good Mk3 Pro-Target Mainly due to the cost difference, and also from reading/hearing the negative things people had said about the Ev2 (slating it as a £1000 spirit level etc..)
Another reason I wasn’t to keen on the Ev was because every photo I saw of it, it never looked as nice as a Pro-Target. Then one day on a trip to TAL Arms they had an Ev2 for sale in laminate and I instantly fell in love with it.. Believe me all the pictures you see on the web do it NO justice at all, they also had a P70 for sale which I was also considering but when I held the both of them the Ev was a clear winner..
People say that the Ev stock is (just a modded Pro-Target stock) and to some extent it is but when you put an Ev in Laminate (the silver option looks very plastically) next to a Pro-Target the Ev is much sharper and modern looking and also with the Ev you get a knee rest (which actually suits the rifle), quite a decent butt hook (which has more adjustments than you may think), spirit level, windicator and a pressure gauge and when you add the price of a Mk3 Pro-Target (£500) a good butt hook (160) and a knee rest (£130) your almost at new Ev prices !!
When I wanted a Pro-Target I had a go of one up my club and it felt fantastic when compared to my S300 but now I’ve been using my Ev for a few months the very same Pro-Target feels like a dog, the main reason for this is the fact that the Ev has a much faster lock time (this is the time the pellet takes to leave the barrel once the trigger has been pressed).. The advantage to this is when your going for a long target you can pull the trigger when your cross hair passes over the kill zone, and as the pellet is on its way so fast you don’t need to hold the gun as still as you would if you had a Pro-Target.
An Ev is obviously based on a Pro-Target with the main difference being the cocking method, the Pro-Target is said to have the slickest” cocking method around but after using the Ev for a while the Pro-Target feels quite clumbersome, also the Ev has a pellet probe so the pellet gets seated the same every time which is a bonus.
As for pellets I only have one recommendation and this is JSB 4.52 people say that their the same as Air Arms BUT THEIR NOT the consistency and quality compared to AA field is much better and they give tighter groupings and fly flatter. Their also spotlessly clean and appear to be pre-lubed with some kind of wax but even though the Ev’s barrel does need regular cleaning this is as regular as every 200-300 shots.
The consistency of the Ev is fantastic but if you do get one it does need running in, as at first it won’t group as well as it should at longer ranges (45 yrds +) but after 1500-2000 shot the whole gun becomes even smother still, and when you miss you know 100% that it wasn’t the gun..
Theirs two Ev2’s at my club and mine has the newer valve but it doesn’t seem to make much difference, it just makes the muzzle blast a bit quieter (it’s still pretty loud though)..
Mine is topped with a Nikko big 60 and an Ian Taylor side wheel and believe me it is a heavy gun (still noticeably lighter that a Pro-Target though) which isn’t to good for standing shots but when it is set up right it feels virtually weightless on your knee
I not knocking the Pro-Target at all, though I must say that a Good Mk 3 Pro-Target will do everything an Ev2 will, but the Ev will do it much better..
If you do opt for a Pro-Target make sure it has a Mk3 regulator as these are much better than the Mk2’s (the Mk3's is virtually the Same as the Ev’s) people say that the Ev has many common parts with the Pro-Target but apart from the trigger which is the same (and is fantastic by the way) the EV has many new parts and has been updated from a Pro-Target and has been brought right bang up to date to keep it at the top of its game
I know this review has been very Ev friendly/biast but I am so glad now that I opted for an Ev2 over a Pro-Target…. don’t get me wrong the Pro-Target (if it’s a good one) is a great gun but its not quite and EV2
Happy shooting
