Off vital - if you use use your computer for online gaming

Hate things that start dowloading stuff automatically.

Much easier just doing it manually then you don't start questioning what the hells wrong with the connection when it suddenly starts playing up.

popular thought is OFF. Working on the theory of "if its not broken dont fix it"

Having said that I leave min on but do a "custom install" to see what its trying to install and then un tick those I dont want.

Yup. Leave as many holes open in your system as possible.

I'm too thick to know what's what, so I let it do auto updates.

If you do a custom install and know what you are picking and choosing there's no problem. IE for a start

PC gamer's have it switched off or on automatic but set to update at times when they know they won't be on the computer.

There is more than just "On" or "Off". Personally I set mine to "Notify me, but don't automatically download or install them". So if I'm in a gaming session, it doesn't steal bandwidth, but I still know when updates are available & do them at a time to suit me.

I've always switched the 'download updates automatically' bit off, cause I like to have a gander at what gets installed on my PC.

I do however run windows update every few days to make sure everything's up to date.

I have my routine of 'spring cleaning' my PC so that it doesn't get cluttered up with crap, so I always remember to check for updates. If you're the type that would be prone to forget to run it, then as Neil says, I would leave it on.
