    Silencer not so silent????

Hi guys, wonder if anyone can help on this, I bought a Air Arms silencer for my S400 from a shop brand new and they very kindly fitted it for me. I did ask them before I bought it whether it would make much difference and they carried out a rather convincing display of one that they had on a gun on display and the difference was very very audible. so they fitted one to my rifle but foolishly I did not get them to test it, still I got it home and although I've only tried it a coulle of times it doesn't appear to have made that much of a difference any ideas??

Are you firing the gun dry or loaded with a pellet?
If you are firing the rifle inside,it will always sound a lot louder than it will in outside use.

    Hi, Eddie.

Are you sure the silencer is far enough down the barrel so that it cannot go any further?

Is the little grub screw in place, not just the hole.
It IS possible that you have an air leak somewhere, this would make the gun seem much noisier.

Fired it dry I'm afraid will know more at the weekend when I get the gun back from my brother who has it for "safe keeping". and also fired it in house. But then so did the shop i bought it from and the diffrence was quite amazing.

The cal of your 400 is important, most commercial silencers will work with a 0.22 pellet i.e. the hole in the middle is big.

If you have a 0.177 not so good ....

Get a Jim Edge silence they are calibre specific and unbelievably effective, you can get them from BAR or Jim himself.

    Don't assume, Eddie..

I once went shooting with a guy who had bought a new combo from a gun shop earlier in the day. The combo was already set up and ready to go.

He wondered why he couldn't see anything through the scope.

They had put it on round the wrong way!!!

So, don't assume, mate. Check it.

If you DO have a leak, it would most likely be from the breech area.
That is where the air expansion causing the 'crack' would come from.

I very much doubt you have a leak, though.

Maybe the silencer doesn't have all of it's baffles?
    Perhaps it's a duffer?

Jim makes a range of silencers for various rifles, Eddie.
I have never seen/used one of his, but they do come highly recommended.

I think Jim shoots at a club in Liverpool. I remember Young Gun telling me he bumps into Jim fairly often.
    Can't swear to that, though..

Jim shoots at Rivvi, he has one of his silencers on a 0.20 cal Rapid and when standing next to him on the firing line I can hear no muzzle crack at all.

Some types of pellets generate a sort of whistling sound as they travel and the gun exhales but that's about it for noise.

If your shooting it in the house dry in a small room then it will give an almighty crack and sound ****.
But if you take it over the fields with a pellet in you will see a huge difference.
My AA silenced 410 is loud in the house but outside its a lot better.
