I would say that if your .303 'twangs', you must have one serious silencer!!

    Sorry, couldn't resist...

Which 303 are you refering to?

I believe a twang is entirely normal in a gun which does not have a spring guide fitted. I hope someone more knowledgeable than I will post soon.

Chronographing is simply the process of firing a pellet across 2 laser beams, a computer calculates the speed of the pellet and from this the muzzle energy is worked out.

usually a metal guide that fits down the centre of the mainspring, if it fits the spring well it stops it vibrating (twanging) when the gun is fired.

In keeping the spring straight it should also maximise the life of the spring (they often come out 'S' shaped).

Looking at the exploded drawing of a 303 here it looks as though the spring is guided by the central rod on the piston (part no. 40) to a certain degree.

Fit a good spring guide and the noise will stop.

    No worries!

I've never had a 303 in bits so I'm guessing here..

I would imagine the central rod doesn't provide the tightest fit on the internal diameter of the spring, given time with a lathe it might be possible make up a sleeve for the rod to provide a better fit...... however, the quick and dirty option would be to use a thick lubricant as a damper on the spring, Maccari Tar is probably the best known specific product, motorcycle chain grease is a pretty good sustitute and you can get it at Halfords rather than ordering it fron the US.

Or in the meantime, forget it, it shoots! ENJOY IT!
