    rooks

took the mutt for a walk today, well, i cycled.went down a lane and there were 4 or 5 big ash trees.there must have been over 100 rooks and there were alot of nests around 20 yards up in the trees,i was underneath them and some just stayed there,i have to get permission to shoot in those trees
anyone got any rook shooting tips if i get permission?

Contrary to what you might have heard, game animals are not hard to kill. No warm-blooded animal can live without a heart, except for the possible exceptions of ex-wives

shoot em in the head . full camo is advisable cause there eyes are good. once youve shot one they will often go mad and start cawing. this normally gives the chance of another shot

i know exactly what you mean mate theres a place on my way to work that is exactly how you say bunch of trees hundreads of rooks.the only tips i have for you is stay very well cammoed up and also aparently if you make a hide get a friend to walk in their with you then your friend leave.aparently they are cleaver but cant count so if they see two go in and one leave they think youve both gone?havnt tried it myself but aparently it works.let me know if you get permission and how it goes.jamie

nah ive never eaten them, only the young ones are reccomened to be eaten.ive never even shot one,ive only shot jackdaws and magpies, well there the only corvids ive shot
its traditional for women and children to shoot the rooks i think, with small shotguns although you see alot of guns called"rook and rabbit rifles"
it is supposed to take part on the 12th of may because that is when you get branchers(birds that cant fly and just stand there on the branches)

My old Grannie told me to pull the heads off, (after you've shot them..! ), other wise the meat is tainted.

When I was a teenager the local farmer always said it was the 10th of May!

Something for you to think about here - with a bit of effort it is possible to entirely wipe out a rookery. I know, I've done it - albeit at the behest of the farmer who was worried that they were damaging his crops. Afterwards, I thought, 'What a bl**dy shame'... I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out in the long term that the crops did better with the rooks there to eat the leatherjackets and other pests...
