    Open Sights

I'm running an open sights comp on Sunday and was wondering what you would consider reasonable min/max distances. I will be using 30 knock downs with standard kill zones.
Most if not all the members rarely use open sights so I don't want to make it impossable. (face plate hits count 1pt and knock down 3pts).

    Cheers
    Stewart

I would have thought a few thirty five yarders will sort the men from the boys. The bulk of the targets at less should make a kills attainable.

Yep it should be interesting to see what rifles turn up. When I suggested it replys were of the '' I've got one in the loft/shed/back of the wardrobe.'' type

It's a good idea, perhaps you will let us have the details afterwards - distances chosen, scores etc.

I have a "wanted" ad here now, but sadly no open sights so far I'm really tempted to put that clothes peg / matchstick sight on just for a laugh. I'll have something on for Sunday.

If you can't get a rifle you could still come along as poeple will double up on guns anyway and I'm trying to get some to lend out.

    Regards

XBOW- I'll do that on sunday night.

    opens,

Some years ago (LATE70s) I droped my hw 35 and nacked the scope,I had put the opens safe,so I was gutted, couldnt afford a new scope, couldnt find opens, so I started to practice with NO SIGHTS, Gallon cans, then on end, tin cans, even a unfortunate rat (12 yds) then empty12 bore cartridge cases at 20 yds, give it a try some time its good fun, ANT. PS I had good eyes THEN.

For all those who were interested here is some info on how my open sight comp went.

The comp was shot over a course of 30 knock-down targets. Three points were awarded for a kill and one point for a hit on the face plate. Shot's could be taken prone, kneeling or standing.
The nearest target was set at 10yrds and the longest 35yrds. The majority were at 20 to 25yrds. The weather was fine with a light breeze.

As expected a wide range of rifles turned up which included some of the following:-
    ASI Paratrooper
    BSA Super Sport
    Webley Eclipse
    Sharp Innova
    HW 35
    HW57
    AGS SR2
    Gamo CFX
    HW90
    Webley Tracker
    Haenel Model 312

The top three scores out of a possable max of 90 were 67, 64, 64 with the lowest being 17.

An interesting result to come out of this comp was that 2nd and 3rd place was taken by two shooters sharing the Haenel 312 which struggles to knock out 5.5ftlb and 1st place was taken by a HW57 that was just pushing 7.5ftlb all three shooters managed kills on the 35yrd targets and all at least scored a hit on all 30 targets. I would assume that this was due to the more manageable recoil from the lower power and of course the talent of the shooters

All who took part agreed that it was great fun and a good leveler as apart from a quick zeroing session just prior to the comp most of the shooters had very little experience of shooting open sights and the 2nd and 3rd placed shooters had never shot the rifle they used before the comp.

This will defiantly become a fixture at my club in future, it is shooting in it's purest form with results relying more on the shooter than the money he has spent on his equipment.

    All the best
    Stewart

I'd like to have a go at this too (for next time) if at all possible. Whereabouts in Kent is it Stumpy?

Our club is near Paddock Wood in Kent. If you drop me a line atseac2006@msn.com I'll send you all the club details and add you to my mailing list so you will get notification of any comps we run.
We run a monthly club comp (last sunday of the month) with no rifle restrictions. And have a pistol challenge planned for the summer which will consist of 3 rounds:-
    1. Fast fire timed at chalk disc targets for CO2 pistols (CP88, Beretta ect.)
    2. X10 knock down target course for spring powered recoiling pistols.
    3. Traditional paper punching for target pistols.
The total of each round to decide the overall winner.
Several examples of each type of pistol will be available so eveyone can have a go.

    All the best

    Stewart
