    It's about $1.78 to the £ today.
Now allow for cost of currency conversion and the import tax that dealers pay for the priviledge of being British.

    and there goes their profit.

$205 and a free tin of pellets too.
Your work is both good and original. Unfortunately where it is good it is not original, and where it is original it is not good.

Look at the figures for this.

The price of the Multi tool in the US is $75. This includes dealer profit at say 15%, so the manufacturers price is $65.20.

It gets ordered by the UK importer. The cost of bringing here is say $8.00. Customs charge some import duty on it at 4%. The cost to the importer is now $76.13. at todays exchange rate this is £42.80.

The importer wants a profit, typically 30%. This is not an unreasonable figure bearing in mind the cost of staff and possibly sales reps. This takes the cost to £55.64.

The shop where you buy it purchases it from the importer and has to pay postage on the tool at say £3.00 (Frequently the min charge) so the shop pays £58 64 for the tool.

The shop wants 25% profit margin on it so the cost goes up to £69.55. The tight Jock wants his cut from the sale as well so add 17.5% VAT and the final price of the tool in the shop, to you is £81.72.

You might think that a 25% profit margin is a bit steep but think about it. The shop owner wants to earn £15,000 per year. He has to pay business costs which will break down into some thing like this per year:

    Rates £1000
    Electric £400
    Heating £400
    Telephone £400
    Rent on shop £5000
    Insurance £500
    Bank charges and fees £800
    Accountant £500
    Minimum cost total £9000
    Salary £15000
    Total £24000 per year.

If the shop is working on a 25% mark up that means the shop has to sell £112800 of goods in a year to achieve this. Additionally if you use a credit card to buy from the shop the card company will take typically 3% of the sale. So if the shop does 50% of its sale on credit card then the turn over has to go up to £114492. That's £2201 per week every week of the year.

This assumes that the shop is a one man band with no staff to allow the owner a day off. If the owner takes a holiday then the sales per week have to go up to compensate.

Lastly, how many of you earn more than £15,000 a year or how many of you would work six days a week, 9 to 6 to earn £15,000. That's only £5.34 per hour.

Rip off Britain is not always as rip off as you might believe.

Good post Keef - now can someone do the maths and explain the other comment from above:-

just done a random search for a very popular British rifle and put the prices through a currency converter.
    US converted price £354
    UK price-----------£459

    Dave.
Dave if you or Wobbleshot PM me the make and model of rifle I will see if I can work out some figures for comparison.

Don't forget that the UK price will vary from shop to shop depending on how many rifles are ordered. The more that are ordered, in general the bigger the discount on the trade price. Also a larger order will be carriage free in UK so ordering say six rifles and getting a 10% discount and not paying say £12.00 carriage on rifles that retail for £500 means the large order shop can sell for £52 less and still make the same profit (approx figures)

also bear in mind when dealing with the US, they have more people eligible to buy more gear, consequently a bigger market place drives prices down. Life standards also vary from state to state as does cost of living and salaries, as an example I earned $18K in Oklahoma State in 1990, the same wage for an equivalent position in the UK was £18K....... so my salary was 0.7 of the equivalent UK salary but on average, so was my cost of living.
