    DIY spring compressor

    Hi,
Anyone got any bright ideas on how to make one? I have a wolfcraft table-top workbench and was thinking of using it as a basis.
    Thanks!

Yes - go to a car boot sale and find yourself a nice cheap sash-cramp. If you don't know what this is, it's a carpenter's tool that is much like a giant g-clamp, but on a slide mechanism. All you'll need to do to use it is put some leather or other soft material over the jaws and you'll have yourself a fully adjustable spring compressor!

I bought the 26" Quick grip from B and Q, cloth on one end and a piece of broom handle on the other and it works great!

Thanks! I'm not sure how the b & q one works in practice though.

i use it mostley for break barrels, you put one rubber clamp over the jaws where the barrel goes and then you put a small piece of broom handle against the sping end, then put the other end of the clamp on, you squeeze the trigger and every pull pushes the broom handle into the gun, taking the pressure of the retaining pin!

Sounds complicated but it really isnt

Some springs have a lot of preload. How do you gradually release the pressure using this method?

On a cheapy i just press the release button and it comes out, the clamp doesnt slide that well so it does slow it down a little,

If im working on a good gun i find if i hold both ends and the release the catch i can hold it and slowly release it, its just easier for putting springs back in more than taking them out!
