DIY gasram, a little help please.

    Hi,
I'm fitting a ram in my tracker as per p bulmers instructions but I'm finding that it has no preload, I could assemble it by hand!
According to him these rams need a little preload to work properly so I'm thinking of adding a few (3 I think) coins to give me some.
    Is this correct?
    Thanks!

A little bit of pre-load is O.K. and like you have suggested a few lower value coins could do it (better than using £ coins ).

Well mine had several mm of preload, and it took all my weight to push the breech plug in.

There should be a rubber plug inside the breech plug, you have to use some sort of washer to prevent the rod on the ram from digging in to the rubber. ISTR a 1p piece fits perfectly.

You have fitted the ram the right way round ? i.e. the fat end goes inside the piston (needs wrapping with tape to fit properly), the rod goes to the rear.

Thanks guys (especially Ray for giving me the ram )
My spring compressor could only just manage a 1p coin to add some preload, it took the spring out fine but these rams are a bugger!
You should have heard it creak! I thought it would give way.

You know you are going to become the worlds leading authority on the Webley Tracker....is this the 'Dowlings Camo special' perchance?

    Yes its from dowlings
I bow down to all the other tracker guru's, I am not worthy!

Well, gasrams in with only a tiny scratch to the blueing. I removed all the weblube, which looked like it as emulified as it was going very white and replaced it with a smidge of hsb mollyslip high speed bearing grease.
So two shots down the road and....easier and smoother to cock, lighter trigger and the firing cycle is so sweet. Quicker and lots less recoil, super smooth.
I stuck my nose on the end and it wasnt even dieseling
I suspect its now down on power, but thats no bad thing.
I was thinking of trying maccari buttons and piston seal but I'm not going to bother now, the standard seal is brand new and was a good fit and I cant imagine it getting any smoother, thats the moly I guess.
Thanks again Ray, I owe you one!

Glad you've got a good result.
The ram was sitting here doing nothing, better to go to a good home

I like these guns, lots of people don't.

I now want to do a Maccari buttons / seal comparison, but am still loking for a suitable s/h unit!
