Would you buy a gun by post?

Question number 1 then - is it normal to buy a gun via post? I'm only asking, as I'm thinking on Leon's, but he's all the way up in Cumbria (4hrs away !!!). I don't think I know enough to trust buying sight unseen and both my main shooting mates live in the Midlands, so they are unlikely to fancy 8hrs in a car to help me..... But I suppose unless its local I'll get that all the time .......

How do others buy their guns?

Another one by post, hmnn not sure, i couldnt really afford the last 10 or so bought from this site . Well at least not untill next pay day .

Seriously though, make sure you get some insurance on the parcle, a tracking number, and that you know who you are dealing with.

I've bought and sold quite a few guns by post with no problems. Just be sure who you're dealing with (ask around etc) and make sure the postage comes with insurance.

Depends on how much.Any thing over £200 I would'nt personally,then again I'm not a collector,I'm happy with just the one gun.

Probably get my eldest boy his first rifle fom someone off here.

as said rreally depends on the person selling, how long they have been here, how may posts (how active) and have they bough/sold a few times before?

i bought my gen 2 XVD unseen from a flea-bay seller as the chap lived in scotland, (great 100% feedback) but I did panic a bit until it turned up on my mat working perfectly. He agreed to stop the auction early so it wasnt even covered by flea-bay

sometimes you takes ya chances if the price is right and everything seems to stack up ok

What a ludicrous statement.
Many of the BBS members, myself included, have been using the services of Royal mail for many years, with varying degrees of success.
Whilst some have easy access to courier services, for a lot of us, Royal mail is the most convenient, and cheapest, carrier.
Personally, apart from an occasional delayed delivery, I have had no problems with any of the numerous deals that have used RM, either SD or as we currently have to increasingly use, parcel services.
Parcel Farce was a continuous source of complaint, but on the few occasions I have used it lately, both within the UK and International, I have had no problems, so it looks like they may have got their act together.
We know there is going to be the odd pilfering, and those who regard all packages as legitimate football practice, but to tar every RM employee the same is ridiculous.
I too have friends within the Royal mail who tell me that the service varies a lot according to which sorting office handles the mail.
As for trying each gun before purchase, in an ideal world that would be prerequisite, but in the real world, somewhat impractical.
A lot of deals on the BBS are based on mutual trust, which, by and large, is well placed. We do get the odd bad deal, which is normally pretty swiftly dealt with, but the best part go through without a problem.
This response is not 'Newbie' bashing, but in this case, if it was, I think it would be well warranted.

Just did it - I'm Down Sowf and gun was up Norf. Special delivery insured - came next day.

I took a piccy of the recorderd delivery docket and offered to send it to the recipient - but he was ok with the number I gave him over the phone.

Your issue is really do you trust the person with whom you want to deal IMHO.

Well that and the potential for damage whilst in transit. Plenty of bubble wrap, stiff cardboard and brown packaing tape will usually get through unscaithed

I have just completed (yesterday) my deal with SteveW for his (now mine) Fenman Profile .20 Good deal, no hassle and I'm well satisfied with the gun. All through email / PM and courier service.

And none of my guns will see the inside of a post van, buying or selling.
