A carbine was originally a short rifle or musket designed to be used from horseback by cavalry. A normal length barrel would be too cumbersome.
In the "good old days," carbines were not so accurate, but with modern air rifles, it doesn't matter. Carbines, such as the S4*0k, are easier to point, perhaps a bit better balanced, but have fewer shots per charge, as the cylinder is shorter as well.
