    BSA Lightning barrel pin removal

    HI guys,

Just got a lightnuing from the car boot for £70 including a hawke 3-9x40 tin of aa hunter and a scope bag,

got a couple of wood dings but ok, usually with a secondhand gun i disassemble. clean it moly and rebuild,

Its making a hell of a twang, is this normal with lightings?

I tried to take it apart but couldnt get out the barrel pin, to get the barrel off the chamber?

Also the retaining pin, is that a usual mallet and punch job?

    Thanks

    Lee

Lee, the back of the spring guide must be pushed into the action against spring pressure in order to remove the pin.
I used one half of a universal joint from an old socket set to bridge over the pin. You must first take of the rear plastic cap.

You need to get/make a tool which compresses the mainspring just enough, so that the retaining pin can be removed.

The barrel pin should punch out if I remember correctly.

Lightnings and Supersport variants are quite twangy.

Not sure that you need to get the barrel off. The cocking link is "double jointed" and just slides out of the piston once you take action from stock. You will need to make a "widget" from a piece of broom handle to compress the spring so that you can slide out the holding pin at the rear of the action and thus release the spring and piston.

Much like a meteor/broom handle job then?

One more problem!! You have to remove the scope rail to get the piston out.Fitted in slots in the cylinder, best tapped backwards very carefully with a piece of pine. Sits on rubber strips which act as shock absorber.

BSA instructions suggest compressing in a vice of some sort (with suitable packing) in order to compress the rubber strips.

If i stick a bit of molly on the spring through the cocking slot will it eventually work its was around and do effectively the same thing??
