HW77 tuning (not the usual so please read)

I know we've had this title a thousand times and a search will unveil many answers.

However, I am not asking how to tune a HW77...I've tuned quite a few before including having one tuned at Venom (Even baz bought a HW77 off me!).

This is more of a begging/scrounging exercise with a request for a bit of advice.

A couple of youngish (18) lads I know from the cricket club have shown an interest in airgunning and have both bought guns. They bought them from a local shop, who sold them to them as 'sold as seen'. The guns are a HW95 and a HW77.

The lads don't have a lot of money and these were all they could afford at the time.

When they showed me the guns they are both cosmetically rough as a Bear's and both of them were well down on power. A new breech seal in the 95 got that up to @ 11fp and that now shoots reasonably well. The HW77 however is shooting at @6fp. I have explained that this is too low to hunt humanely (at any reasonable distance) and have also tried to explain the laws regarding airguns and the 12fp legal limit etc.

The lad has asked me if I can sort him his gun out.

Now here's the scrounging bit....

I know I can just buy a Venom kit or a Chambers kit and fit that but that will cost around £50 and as I say the lad has just coughed what little cash he has to buy the gun.

At the moment I don't have any spare bits for a 77.

Anybody got any spare guides (front and rear) that I can fit to a new spring. Or a set of guides/spring that are OK that you replaced for some reason that you want to flog on the cheap to get this lad up and running.

I know in an ideal situation you make the guides fit the actual spring but the original metal HW rear guides are useless (far too much play).

Sorry for the blatent begging. If it was me I'd bite the bullet and spend the cash and get the job done right but I'm trying to get the gun shooting right for this lad at the lowest cost.

The other part of the question is....

I have told this lad about the 12FP law and that there is no way I will tune it for him over that limit.

When I've tuned it.....Is it worth giving him a chrono test result chart with a date and signature on it showing that the gun is under 12FP with different pellets.Obviously I keep a copy on file.

I suggest this in case in the future he goes along the darkened road of 'square' springs etc and totally wrecks his gun but puts it a few FP over the limit and then gets pulled by Mr Plod.

I don't fancy a knock from Mr Plod saying that this lad says I have made him this nice little firearm.

Probably paranoid but any advice welcome.

Bozzer,

I have the following bits for a HW80K:

1) Main Spring (12 ft.lbs.)
2) Venom piston washer.
3) Venom breech seal.
4) Probably a spring guide for the above spring.

The Venom bits are used but functional. It's just that I had replaced these with new parts when I had serviced the rifle last.

Would any of these be of any use?

Rustam.

Definately get the post office to put a stamp on it (mail to yourself) and get them to put a seal on it if possible, better safe than sorry. Fraid I've got no parts but the more airgunners we can get into the sport the better for us, so just a heads up! Keep up the goodwork!!!

Boz,

I was talking to Ossypete a short while ago who offered me spares for a HW97 (same action) I'm not entirely sure what he has, but i'm pretty sure a mainspring was mentioned, so working on that assumption, if you can have a word with Pete, get him to send the bits over to me, i'd be happy to help out by donating a tophat and rear guide (which I will machine to fit the mainspring).

Get yourself a piston seal as well (original seal replacement should be in the region of £6) and Bobs yer uncle.

That any good to you?

Sorry for the delay folks.....Out cricketing all W/E.

Thanks for the offers of help and advice.

I'll try and get in touch with Pete and ask him to send his spring to Sam so that he can make up a set of guides.

In the meantime I'll go and get a new set of seals.

If Pete doesn't have a spring I'll get back to Rusty and Baz and go from there.

Many thanks again boys.

PS Just read through the thread again and I'll hold on getting the seals because if Pete doesn't have a spring I'll see if Baz/Rusty can sort me out with the lot.

Cheers

I've a stock and a tired (but still producing 9.9ft lbs) spring and guides you can have. The stock needs refinishing but has no major dinks. Yours for free but postage costs would be appreciated.

Very generous of you mate.

I've mailed Pete, so I'll see what result we get from that avenue first.

The stock on this one is a bit tatty but again no major problems. I would hate to be greedy and have that one of yours for free when perhaps someone else on here who reads this thread may need one. I'll be in touch if I don't get fixed up with a spring/guide.

Thanks again mate ...very good of you.

Boz/Pete.

Thought for the day!

Can this hang on till next weekend? If I meet up with Pete at Chester, that'll cut postage cost out for getting the spring over to me for starters. I can then make up a guide & tophat, then only 1 way postage to Boz.

Good thinkin' ay?

Hi fellas

That all sounds fine to me.

I'm 90% certain of going to Chester myself (..the Dragon is also probably coming) so I can pay Pete whatever he wants for the spring and sort the post and packing out with Sam and then Sam can sort it when he's ready and send it to me.

I'm sure the lad won't mind waiting a couple more weeks as you guys are saving him some money.

Many thanks fellas
