Were you shooting at the same distance for both calibres? Was it windy and if so were the groups from the .22 stretched along the horizontal?
A few friends and I have run an informal (ish) test with a .177 and .22 version of the following guns to see if there were any truth to the .177 is more accurate than .22 generalism:
Rapid MKII
Beeman version HW 80
Daystate Huntsman MK II
and on average the .177 seemed to group a bit tighter CtoC than the .22's. We used the best pellets for each gun and well all shot all guns an average of 5 targets 5 shots per target.
The overall average was about 8mm CtoC better at 40 yards.
Make of it what you will.

Surly if the same distance the .177 is travelling faster and has dropped less and been less affected by wind etc…. But frankly – who cares about mm of variation.
The little pellets spend less time in the barrel, giving you less time to affect the aim with wobbling.
Think of it as relative -
.22 pellets deviating by their own width over the range will give an over all grouping of .66 of an inch
whereas
.177 pellets deviating by THEIR own width over the range will give a grouping of .531 of an inch
I dont know wether this is true or not but it makes sense (to me) <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:--> <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:-->
Joe
Same distance for both calibers on all rifles INDOORS - so no wind at all.
PCP's were bencgrested springers were not (the Rapids concistantly gave the best groups of all <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:-->)
Some of the most accurate guns I own are .22's in PCP, springer and co2. They'll shoot right alongside some of the best .177 sporters in the same classifications. I think whatever differences truly exist fall more to slight variations in the chosen pellets quality or barrel quality than anything else. Regards- Russ ( your evil twin-LOL)

Must have been a transporter accident when I last beamed aboard the Enterprise that has created my evil counterpart - but materialized him in anothe part of the USA.
