S410 extra, is it the right choice?

I've owned an Airsporter .177 since I were-a-lad and am now in my fifties. Time to move into the 21st century me thinks. I have been busy combing thru' the various sites and today have found this one. Sorry if you've seen this all before, its my first post.

I have access to a reasonable amount of rabbit shooting and more woodies than you could shake a stick at, magpies are increasingly common here now too. Hares are very common. Livng on the east anglian fens means limited cover and mostly longish range shots.

To the point, will an S410 extra (reg. conv) be up to the job (provided I am).
There is such a vast array of scopes, its difficult to know where to start. It looks like the JSB Exact or AA diablo Field pellets come highly recommended too, any advice much appreciated.

Good rifle but steer clear of the Extra

if you want a 400 series FAC you are better with a regged classic at 28ft/lb.

    FAR better balanced

However - not for hares mate, and on most days good for 60 yards on magpies and crows.

great gun mate had a s400 for 2 years and will outshoot me any day. a wee bit noisy, i shortened the shrouded barrel and fitted a theoben silencer made a great job of it. my longest kill was 87 yds and i can put in reasonable groups at110 yds although i never need to shoot at that distance.aa fields and magnums are the only pellets i will use. in short a powerful gun at half the money of a theoben could you shoot the dearer gun any betyter

A nice rifle but very long and clumsy, and yes you will shoot better with the shorter version and yes get it reged.
Also look at other rifles which are top performers in FAC format like the Rapid Range,Daystate,FX range and BSA .
Pellet choice is perfect but when it gets windy abit Bis Mags are better. Both pellets will perform in 30ftlb and the bis mag even more. The xtra will give a very low shot-count too at high power where as the rapids and daystates are top shot-counters in 30+ftlb.

thanks to all for your advice. I hope that with a reg conversion on the .22 xtra it will up the shots per fill to maybe 50 - 60. Shortening the barrel sounds expensive, what are the benefits?

hi its only a shrouded barrel, when we fitted the silencer we shortened it so it would not be overly long,it does nt make any difference to the shooting of it. i can usually group under an inch at 70 yds dont think i could do any better with a dearer gun.everybody is buying the latest guns thinking it will make them shoot better having the latest technology i dont think this is the case at all
