    Humane hunting distance

Right gents, whats the general distance for cleanly dispatching, magpie, pigeons etc using a lightning .22. I have zeroed scopes to 40 metres & i can hit a small matchbox from this distance. Would this have enough impact to cleanly kill? Using AA Hunters

Again, thanks for all advice in advance !!!

I would try to keep it within 30 yards with a .22, and a bit more with the girly calibre.

yes in both .22 and .177 at 40yds, always dependant on the shooters abilities to place shot after shot into a 40mm circle consistantly.

I have despatched 1 rabbit at 75 yds in .22 and one rabbit at 60+ yards in .177, don't always do that, the conditions have to be perfect and you have the confidence in your kit to do the job.

the distance at which you can consistently hit the target area

40mm is a bit much IMO, too much room for error.

    25mm is more realistic for hunting <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_smile.gif" alt="Smile" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:-->

Well firstly, change to AA fields which will give you more hitting power than the AA hunters. (forget the word hunters, they are less aerodynamic so cant be)

    Zero at 30m for .22

Please check the velocity of your gun first , then if you can hit a 1 inch circle at 35 yds ok.
shoot between the eye and ear this will dispatch it humanely, about 3ft lbs will kill a rabbit at 30 yds but you must hit the target to avoid suffering.(your rifle must be shooting close to 12 tf lbs .)

how do you check the velocity ? ...sounds like an expensive piece of hardware required

I found the webley lazapels shoot awesome in the lightning (.22)

I would say a softie target like birds are ok at 40-50y but keep to about 35y for mammals.
Totally blatted a squizzer at 30y with my lightning, Bullseye 100% (AAfield, only as I get them for the 410 anyway).

What scope have you got? I'm in between scopes and want a springer rated fixed zoom affair. as the lightning mullerd my last scope (hawke airmax)

75 yards, you damn sniper ho! I bet you had the sun just right and had been watching the bunnie for hours waiting for that perfect moment. <img src="http://jsramsbottom.co.uk/bbs/e/icon_smile.gif" alt="Smile" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:--> Well done mate!

A good test at killing distances, is to stick a piece of 2 x 2 Soft wood.
At the Distances you plan to shoot.

Mark a target on it and see how far your pellet penetrates the lump of wood.

If the pellet, is inside the wood, one could expect it to enter and kill rabbits and pigeons, etc. at that range.

Also to be remembered is that it needs to be fired into the wood , not dropped in to the wood.
    Pellet should go in straight.
As a sub 12FP fired Air Gun Pellet does not have enough falling weight to kill for sure.

It's called a Combro chrono, costs around £32 and most of us wouldn't be without one.
