A few ?'s about stock finishing

    Afternoon all

on the 4th coat of oil on my vulcan stock now. its starting to turn a lovely colour so by the time i get to 6 or 7 coats it should be just right. However i have a few questions so if you can answer them that'd be fantastic.

    1. sometimes when each coat dries there are a few extra shiney bits or thin bits. whats the best way to avoid this?

    2. between each coat i've been semi vigorusly rubbing it with fine steel wool. should i be a bit more gentle here?

    3. what do i do when i hit the 6th or 7th coat? do i leave as is? rub it down with wool then leave as is? or do something else?

    4. is there anything else i should be doing?

    cheers
    Rhys

From personal experience, dunno mate, but when I get my LH prosport stock from Mr Maccari I will be following the instructions he has on his website, http://www.airguns.citymax.com/catal...1486/42975.htm

I figured he can't be that far off can he?

    which oil are you using.
I use danish and I basically do as you do, let it soak in for 24hrs then take it back to wood again repeat 6-7 times, the wood absorbs the oil rather than just the oil/varnish mix sitting on top of the wood. On the final layer I also rub with a good cloth to get a lustre on it, then wax a few times.

"Once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year."
(or if you get bored, finish it off with a beeswax based polish. ) After the first few coats, I rub the oil in by hand, but it depends on the finish to the grain you have.

finishing wax I think its colron, clear natural stuff. Again, I give it 3 coats. You end up with a lustre rather than a shine.... i dont like shiny air rifles

i must admit the oil was drying a little shiney and slippery. once i get the coat of fluff off (dropped one side on the carpet! damn slippery edges) and apply the final coat again i'll give the wax a try
