Cannot find a decent pellet for a HW90 (FAC) - 0.22" calibre. Is it running too hot?

Tried the following pellets in a HW90 yesterday but none of them grouped as well as I would expect them to at a mere 25 yards.
Crosman Accupel.
Crosman Premier (Die #2).
RWS Superdomes.
Eley Wasp 5.6 mm.
H&N Silhouette Diabolo.
H&N FTT.
Webley Venom Lazapell.
Webley Venom Lazapoint.
AA Field 5.52mm.
AA Hunter.
Gamo Match - ribbed wadcutters.
G.Smith Pointed.
G.Smith Wadcutters.
G. Smith Domes.

The only pellets that were reasonably exceptable but still not good enough were the Superdomes, Wasps and the Indian G. Smith's.

The rifle is supposed to be running at 810 ft./sec. with Superdomes.

I have not checked the muzzle for burrs because a muzzle brake has been loctited onto it but I would expect this to be in good condition.

Could it be that the power is too high? If so, what velocity/muzzle energy do these rifle shoot best at? Approximately, what would the velocity reduce by with one quick tap on the Schrader valve.

We have access to a Slim Jim pump for TAC's. Does this need a special adapter just in case we need to use it on the rifle?

Thanks.

Rustam,
I am a bit confused! You say that the gun is FAC rated but a non FAC HW90 runs at approx 853m/s.Check it out over a chrono see what reading you get in foot pounds.
To my knowledge a slim jim pump cannot be used on a HW90.

Rust, try recovering a pellet to see how it looks, this will tell you if it's too hot (mashing the pellets)

One quick tap of the schrader will equate to.... not a lot.

I reckon around 5 (quick)taps is about one FP, but it depends on so many things - RAM volume, swept volume, piston weight...

800 may be a little warm with the pressures involved (pellet side) - it's not a PCP with it's gentle acceleration characteristics - but I honest think the problem is more likely elsewhere...

At the risk of stating the obvios, have you checked scope, mounts, bore clean, breach tight, etc. ?

PS Forget the slim jim - theoretically possible with appropriate adapters / valves introduce inline, but I guess you don't have 'em

850 Meters per second - er, no way mate, may 800- feet per second in .177 - I'd be suprised if this one wasn't a .22, hence 800 is around 24 FP

Its not power thats the problem, JSB Exact/Field will run at 30ftlb if suited to the gun

Firstly, is it a new gun? If so it will need a couple of tins to bed in, if not have you cleaned the barrel?

Are you suing a suitable scope that can take gasram? Are you using Dampamounts? If so are the rubbers ok?

Are you sure you're not just a crap shooter

Hi Russ,
seems like you have a hot number here.I use Gamo-Pro Mags.,Crossman prems,Eley wasp 5.5(5.6 are a tight fit)....not forgetting the HN baracuda and the Hn match wadcutters...best on rats. With these pellets the gun averages about 20-21 ft.lbs...
tell me when did u purchase the gun.....is it brand new?

I would expect the HNFTT or Prems to run well at 20ftlb, having done so through my Eliminator. They did start to spread after 830fps so you maybe running a bit hot although AA Field have run at higher ftlb as Baz says.

Hi all and thanks for the replies.

The rifle is indeed in 0.22" calibre. Thought I had mentioned that in the title. Ah yes, there it is.

Jon,

Pellets come out flattened after going through one inch of ply and hitting a concrete back-stop.

I did not check the scope mounts because the owner insisted they were okay. These too had Loctite 243 on the bolts/screws. Also asked him about the bore and the owner said he had cleaned it very recently. Don't know what exactly he used. The scope seems to be in good order and there is no play within the breech jaws. Breech seal is fine.

There is a Slim Jim to hand but it is for TAC's. Haven't seen it, so cannot even describe the adapters if indeed there are any.

Baz,

Rifle is approximately two years old and I expect it has been run in. Externally at least it is in very good condition. Owner claims to have cleaned the bore recently. Approximately 50 shots fired after the bore was cleaned and the group tests were conducted.

The scope is a Leupold Vari X III 3.5-10X40. No Dampamounts on board. The mounts looked similar to Sportsmatch's two piece double mounts.

Kev,
First time I shot a gasram. Interesting experience to start with but got used to it. I think. Anyway, it was the owner who was shooting for groups. Hats off to those who can shoot an Eliminator well. I will stick to Venom and Baz tuned springers. Thank you very much.

Clary,
Not my rifle, mate. It's approximately two years old and it has been owned from new by the present owner. Did not have the 5.5mm Eley. If you are in Bombay, send me 50 will you. Thanks.
--------------------------------------------------

If the owner permits, I will clean the bore myself and check the stock and mount screws personally before trying for groups again. Will also chrono it this time.

could the gasram be leaking?
I know it's almost new,but I'd check it out anyway

Maybe your holding the gun to tight i find that a very loose hold improves accuracy, cradle the gun rather than hold it.

Doubt it's leaking. Infact that would be a blessing in disguise and make it pleasant to shoot.

Hi Andy,

The rifle was shot with a light grip.

These can be tricky to shoot, and are somewhat hold sensitive, so keep practising! The gun is not shooting pellets at velocities beyond their design limits, so just be sure to dot all your "i's" and cross your "T's" when it comes to hold and follow through. Regards, Russ
