SPRINGER ACCURACY

Just been down the range to test a .177 Feinwerkbau Sport which I have just done a re-lube job on. At 25 yards off a rest it printed a ten shot group of 10mm c-to-c, another of 11mm, and one of 8mm.

This is without running-in, using H&N Match hi-speed, with a 4x cheap scope & two-piece mounts. I need to get used to the trigger and recoil, but I was very pleased with these results. I'm going to get a combro and try and find the best pellet for it now.

Not bad for a 20-year old 'obsolete' springer. It only weighs about 7lbs and is very 'pointable'. I would recommend anyone who is offered one snap it up immediately! Mine was £145 and in excellent condition, so there are bargains to be had ....

Got to agree there, I'm in the Isle of Man this week & have been playing with my FWB today, similar results, but aren't they hold-sensitive?

Mine's a Bowkett conversion & has a very quick snappy firing cycle. The closest comparison would be a gasram rifle.

Very much ahead of their time, well engineered, mine (a Mk1) also has a beech stock that is nicer than a lot of walnut stocks I've seen.

The hold-sensitivity might be partly down to the light weight I suppose, but they really don't like being too tightly gripped, or too softly. I used Dri-Slide in the compression chamber with a tiny smear of SM50 behind the piston washer, a smear of moly grease on the rear end of the piston body, and a thin layer applied with a toothbrush on the spring. The recoil is not a Venom or Bowkett-style thump, it still has its two-phase feel, but the rifle is very smooth.

Shame they don't make them any more. The trigger could be re-vamped and a couple of other details changed and it would easily compete with the HW80 and 95, at least in the UK market.

Hope it wasn't your toothbrush.....

Talking of old-but-good springers I've been sifting through 25 years' worth of airgun mags & found a few things on Mercuries as well as the tuning article I mentioned so I'll get them scanned for you Alistair.

Thanks for all the archive info chaps. I think I am on a mission to see how true those AGW tests and articles were, the ones that I took for Gospel when I was a teenager ...

The Mercury 'S' is next.

Fosberry38, you say you got those small groups but also that it was very hold-sensitive. How consistent were your groups - if you see what I mean. Were they all in the same position with relation to the aim point? How about doing one of those StraightShooters 'real world accuracy targets?

Thanks for the link Ian ...

The groups I shot were a bit laterally displaced, this was due to my lack of control over the trigger. The 8mm group was a nice round cloverleave though. I found out about the FWB hold-sensitiveness when I borrowed a .22 version years ago, it grouped like a shotgun until the owner told me not to grip the rifle so tightly ...

Oh that brings back some memory's that does. Years ago when I had HW35 export Vixen, a Friend of mine bought a FWB124, what a little jem, I fell in love with it, but was to macho at the time, being young and all that, to admit it.
So I stuck with the HW, even though I preferred his 124. I used to borrow it as often as I could, lending him my HW35 and telling him it was more powerfull, which of course it surely was not. Happy days.

I can remember seeing one reviewed very positively when I was (I think) still at primary school...

Just out of interest, which range do you shoot at? I'm planning to take up shooting again, but there doesn't seem to be a vast amount of choice in central London...

If I were you I'd join the Bisley Field target Club, which is what I'm going to do when I have more time. They have a FANTASTIC set up, and it is only 40 minutes from Waterloo on the train. They are v.friendly too. Look at this

http://www.bfto.org.uk/

And its only about £40 to join.

If you are in North London then the Lea Valley club is only 20 mins from Kings X and they have a good set-up too.
